Last Samurai Standing: Release date news, cast details, streaming details and more about the upcoming historical drama

Netflix’s Last Samurai Standing has generated immense curiosity among viewers even before its release. The historical drama is based on the manga series of the same name, which in turn was inspired by Shogo Imamura’s novel Ikusagami.

Set in the late 19th century, the show takes place shortly after the end of the Samurai age. When the warriors are given a chance to turn their fate around by participating in a deadly challenge, 292 people show up at the event.

What follows is chaos, bloodshed, and violence as the warriors slash each other’s throats to win the competition and a staggering prize of 100 billion Japanese Yen. Last Samurai Standing is all set to premiere on Netflix on November 13, 2025.

The release date of Last Samurai Standing

Last Samurai Standing will be released on Netflix on Thursday, November 13, 2025. The show will be available to stream globally and not only in Japan. It is going to comprise six episodes, all of which will be dropped at the same time on the streaming platform. The first two episodes of the series were previously screened at the 30th Busan International Film Festival in September this year.

What to expect from Last Samurai Standing?

The show takes place in 1878, when the Samurai age ended in Japan. Shujiro Saga, a former assassin dealing with a financial crunch, has to take care of his ailing wife and child. He learns that a competition is being organized at the Tenryu-ji Temple in Kyoto, where different warriors will fight each other.

As Saga joins the contest, 291 more warriors show up at the temple. The organizers make it clear that there are no rules, and the Samurai will have to nab their rivals’ wooden tags to make it out alive. Following a string of lethal challenges, the one who survives and reaches Tokyo wins the competition and earns a reward of 100 billion Yen. The official synopsis of the series reads:

“Set in Kyoto, the story gathers 292 warriors at Tenryuji Temple, each handed a wooden tag and thrust into a brutal contest. To survive, they must steal their rivals’ tags and reach Tokyo to claim a massive cash prize.”

It further says:

“As the game begins, warriors deploy every tactic imaginable: some unleash arrows from afar, others dart through the chaos with daggers, some wield massive blades with overwhelming strength, while others rely on cunning strategy. With so many ways to fight, the battle for survival moves at breakneck speed.”

Who stars in Last Samurai Standing?

Junichi Okada plays the lead role of Shujiro Saga in Last Samurai Standing, and also serves as a producer. He is joined by Yumia Fujisaki as Futaba Katsuki, Masahiro Higashide as Kyojin Tsuge, Kaya Kiyohara as Iroha Kinugasa, Taichi Saotome as Shikura Adashino, Shota Sometani as Kocha Kamuy, Kairi Jo as Shinjiro Sayama, Taiiku Okazaki as Jinroku Keage, and Yasushi Fuchikami as Sakura.

The cast also includes Tetsushi Tanaka as Hisoka Maejima, Wataru Ichinose as Raizo Tachibana, Riho Yoshioka as Shino, Ayumu Nakajima as Shinpei Nagase, Arata Iura as Toshimichi Ōkubo, Takayuki Yamada as Jinbe Ando, Hiroshi Tamaki as Ukyo Kikuomi, Gaku Hamada as Toshiyoshi Kawaji, Hideaki Itō as Bukotsu Kanjiya, and Hiroshi Abe as Gentosai Okabe.

Additionally, the series features Ryudo Uzaki, Takashi Sasano, Yuya Matsuura, Daisuke Kuroda, Toshihiro Yashiba, Mitsuo Yoshihara, Satoru Matsuo, Yoshi Sakou, and Takaaki Enoki in undisclosed roles. The full cast list is as follows:
