Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Season 27 kicked off with an emotional premiere on NBC. A long-standing spin-off to one of the most popular TV franchises, the first episode mourned the passing of a beloved Law & Order character, Capt. Donald Cragen (Dann Florek). While Florek did not make an appearance to bid farewell to his iconic character, the episode featured an emotional speech, which was played at Cragen's funeral.

Capt. Olivia Benson and her team returned in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Season 27 Episode 1 and bid their goodbyes to the captain. Benson was naturally emotional as she had spent the majority of her career training under Cragen.

Since emotions were already running high, Fin announced that he might retire soon, which shocks Benson. Later, when Fin is attacked by some thugs, he deliberately keeps this news from Benson, but she finds out anyway. When Benson meets him at the hospital, the two share a heart-to-heart moment and Fin promises to work hard to gain Benson's trust and honour their professional relationship.

Here is the complete recap of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Season 27 Episode 1.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Season 27 Episode 1 recap- A sad reunion

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Season 27 Episode 1 opens with the iconic Captain Donald Cragen's funeral. His integrity and command were highlights of the franchise and Capt. Benson was there to pay her respects. As she sees a video of Cragen giving a speech on his retirement, playing in the bar, she is greeted by many familiar faces. While the Season 27 premiere opened with a funeral, it also featured a brief reunion with some iconic Law & Order characters.

As Benson shared stories about his former captain with Sonny Carisi and Amanda, she was greeted by Special Agent George Huang, the squad's former resident psychiatrist. The two friends hugged, mourned their loss, and when Benson was bouncing off, she met her ex-boyfriend and former squad mate, Brian Cassidy. After some initial awkwardness, the two hugged it out at last.

Finally, when Benson was about to leave the funeral, she saw her longtime partner, Elliot Stabler, leaning beside a car. The two have shared decades of friendships, history, and case files, and Benson shared her loss with Stabler until she was called to the One Police Plaza.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Season 27 Episode 1 recap- Benson helps an assaulted woman

After this emotional reunion, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Season 27 Episode 1 pivoted to the case of the week, which was about a young woman who was r*ped by the man whose apartment she was renting. The building's super was crucial to the case and was the only one who could testify against the man in court. However, since the super was living in the country illegally, Immigration and Customs Enforcement were after him. However, even with this major risk, the super testified in the court, and the man was arrested. As expected, he was arrested by the ICE the next minute.

While Benson was happy that she had finally fulfilled her promise to the woman and delivered justice, she was worried about the super. As it turns out, Tynan pulled some strings, and the super was released from jail. Additionally, Tynan also helped him get a visa, and he will soon become a legal immigrant.
