Law & Order: Special Victims Unit fans were hit with a wave of sadness this year.
The show has lost one of its quietest but most beloved stars - Frannie, the golden-hearted dog who was part of Amanda Rollins’ family both on and off screen.
The sweet dog passed away in June 2025, leaving actress Kelli Giddish, who plays Rollins, feeling brokenhearted. It’s a loss that fans of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit feel deeply, even months after Frannie found her resting peace.
Frannie: The four-legged star who stole every Law & Order: Special Victims Unit fan’s heart
Every Law & Order: Special Victims Unit fan remembers Frannie as the tender and loyal dog who always brought cuteness and softness to some of the most intense scenes.
What many might not have realized at first was that Frannie wasn’t just Rollins’ dog on screen, but she was also Kelli Giddish’s real-life best friend. Giddish revealed that she had found Frannie as a stray puppy years ago, and the two had been each other's support ever since.
Frannie has been seen on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in several memorable fan-favorite scenes. In one instance, she protected Rollins during a fight, or maybe even a warm scene where the two of them shared some popcorn on the couch. For longtime fans of SVU, these small scenes stood out in a show that constantly deals with crime and abusers.
In an interview with Forbes back in 2024, Giddish spoke fondly about her loyal companion, saying,
“She was a puppy when I first brought her to set and now she’s 14. She doesn’t hear well now, but she’s still doing great. We call her ‘Nanny Frannie’ at my house.”
Kelli Giddish’s emotional farewell and the tribute to her dog Frannie
When news of Frannie’s passing broke, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit fans flooded social media with messages of love and support for Giddish. The actress shared her heartbreak on Instagram in June 2025, writing;
“Lost my girl yesterday. She’s been by my side every step for nearly 15 years. Wise, warm, gentle but our family’s fierce protector. My protector and confidante.”
Her post continued:
“I don’t really have the words to say everything that she meant to me. So much love in my heart and hers. We found each other, and that’s what I’m beyond thankful for.”
Speaking later to TVLine, Giddish revealed she wasn’t sure how Law & Order: Special Victims Unit would address Frannie’s absence on the show, but mentioned she had one small wish: A picture of Frannie on Rollins’ desk.
“I know Rollins had three kids...but can we please put a picture of Frannie up on the desk?”
It’s a simple tribute, but one that perfectly fits the bond they shared both as actress and character.
For fans of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Frannie wasn’t just a dog, but a part of the show. Her face on screen always reminded fans that even with the darkest and most traumatic cases, love and loyalty can still exist.
As Rollins returns to the team and Giddish continues her journey on SVU, Frannie’s memory will remain forever curled up in the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’s legacy.
