Law & Order: SVU Season 27 is returning to NBC with the first female showrunner, Michele Fazekas, at the helm. Fazekas was a former writer and producer for early seasons of the show and, after serving as showrunner/co-showrunner for Gen V, is returning to SVU.
It appears she's also looking to make some big waves with the show, with a beloved potential reunion on the horizon in the upcoming season. Nostalgia can be a powerful tool for procedurals like Law & Order: SVU in making fans even more invested in the characters. According to reports, a reunion after 14 years is set to be the ride of their lives for long-time fans of the show.
Law & Order: SVU set to facilitate a much-needed reunion after 14 long years
Law & Order: SVU is currently filming its first episode for the upcoming Season 27, and it appears that fans are in for a nostalgic ride with the upcoming episode. A seemingly innocent Instagram post has sparked rumors of a reunion that has been overdue for 14 very long years.
Here is the Instagram post in question:
The post by Christopher Meloni, who played Elliot Stabler until Season 12, featured Dann Florek and Mariska Hargitay as well and was captioned:
"Hanging out with friends on a Friday nite"
It could not be more obvious than that, but it looks like the OG trio is making it back to our screens for Season 27. Fans are excited beyond expectation at this news, and the comment section is proof of that.
Dann Florek played Captain Donald Cragen for 15 impressive seasons on Law & Order: SVU, whereas Mariska Hargitay has been a part of the series since the premiere. Even though these characters have made their way back to Law & Order with one of the others, this is the first time since 2011 that these characters will be seen together on Law & Order: SVU.
Additionally, Benson and Stabler's history on SVU is nothing short of iconic, even if they've never gotten together. Maybe this reunion will be the end for the slowest of slow burns that television has ever seen.

Another surprise in leaked set photos showed that Dean Winters, who played Brian Cassidy, was also spotted on the sets, marking the character's return since their Season 20 departure from the show.
Law & Order: SVU has featured comparatively lower ratings for the past few seasons, but Fazekas has previously done a beautiful job when bringing together stories that balanced the horrors of the Special Victims Unit with the interpersonal relationships and personal moments of the characters.
As a writer on the show, she has brilliantly contributed to episodes such as 911, Conscience, and Manipulated, so if this is the future we can expect from Season 27, then this could be the season that SVU turns around.
