Netflix’s Locke & Key delivered an impactful ending to the story of the Locke family.
The finale was not just about the final battle of good vs evil, but about acceptance.
At the core of the series, which ran for 3 seasons until 2022, was the titular Locke family, consisting of Nina Locke (the mother) and her three children, Tyler (Connor Jessup), Kinsey (Emilia Jones), and the youngest, Bode (Jackson Robert Scott).
The Locke family got entangled in the world of magic when they moved to Keyhouse following the death of the patriarch, Rendell Locke (Bill Heck).
It unleashed truths and made the Locke family sacrifice to secure a life away from constant supernatural threat. Co-showrunners Meredith Averill and Carlton Cuse tailored the ending to bring a sense of closure for Rendell’s death, giving the celebrated fantasy drama a fitting end.
Locke & Key finale explained: What really happened to the Locke family
The ending scene of Locke & Key centered on one of the most sinister villains of the show, Capt. Frederick Gideon (Kevin Durand), who nobody wanted to strike a bad score with. His character was so evil that even the demon Dodge maintained his distance from him.
The climax: how Capt. Frederick Gideon was finally defeated
The showdown of Locke & Key took place at Keyhouse. Kinsey Locke (Emilia Jones) successfully wielded the Alpha Key and pushed it right into the villain’s chest, who had threatened the family from the beginning.
The decisive blow was delivered by Nina Locke (Darby Stanchfield), who pushed the evil British soldier into the blue void, a portal to the evil dimension, finally getting rid of him for good.
However, the family does not walk out of the face-off unharmed. Even though the action felt like relief, it was not long before we saw the real magnitude of casualties and destruction involved in the process.
Just before the climax of Locke & Key, in the last episode, the group consisting of Kinsey, Tyler, Ellie, and Sam was inside Gordie's head. Gideon, with his powers, had used the Head Key to try and retrieve the Creation Key, which Ellie and Erin had stashed there long ago.
Tragically, Gordie, who had been stabbed by Gideon, succumbed to his injuries. Sam, who was also trapped in Gordie's head, was presumed dead after failing to get out in time.
The Family's choice: why the magic keys had to go
Gideon’s fall into the portal did not seal a happy ending for the Locke family. Tyler quickly observed that the blue void began to shrink because the defeated demon had two keys on him when he entered.
Tyler tossed in the Head Key, and it is revealed that the portals were directly linked to the keys. This led the Lockes to a prompt realisation: the only way to seal the dark dimension forever was to dispose of every last magic key into the shrinking void.
The family was united in this decision, and they were already hurt by the death of their family friend Gordie. They could no longer ignore the truth that the keys invited pure chaos and unrest into their lives.
Saying goodbye: closure for Rendell and the Lockes' new beginning
Before the episode comes to a close with a final act, the family uses the Timeshift Key for one last, meaningful moment. They travel back to a distant past to pay a visit to their late father and husband, Rendell Locke (Bill Heck).
They spent time together, embracing and talking. It is a wholesome, emotional moment where Rendell agrees with their decision, acknowledging that it should have been done by him years ago.
According to one of the Locke & Key showmakers, the moment showcased the family's journey and the true meaning of magic in this context. As the scene returns to the present day, we see Bode and Kinsey, who have used the Memory Key on themselves, ensuring the memory of magic stays with them.
Eventually, they throw the last of the keys into the blue void. The Locke family now moves forward, with Tyler leaving Keyhouse and packing for his job. Nina gets back into coaching.

Locke & Key ends with a tease, just when we thought the keys were all gone, a question from Bode makes you stop for a moment. He asks if others can hear the sound of a whisper, suggesting, there could be more keys than were tossed into oblivion.
