Lord of The Rings: Rings of Power's first season sets the stage for the creation of the Three Elven Rings. Now, in season 2, the show explores the making of the rest of the powerful rings. As the series moves forward with its five-season plan, the people in charge, J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, have changed the original story by J.R.R. Tolkien, to fit their show about the Second Age.

In Lord of The Rings: Rings of Power, the Elves of Eregion created the Rings of Power, nineteen of which were made with Sauron's knowledge and some with his direct help. But Sauron went behind their backs to forge the twentieth and most powerful Ring, the One Ring, in the fires of Mount Doom.

The show's title hints at the significance of the rings, and the premiere episodes deliver. The rings' allure is undeniable, as seen in Galadriel's conviction that hers gives her more power and control, and Gil-Galad's fascination with his own.

Even Elrond's quest for help from Cirdan the Shipwright showcases how easily one can fall under the rings' influence. The rings' dark power is a crucial aspect of the franchise, and season 2 sets the stage for the epic struggles between Middle-earth's key players.

Who created the rings in Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power?

In Tolkien's original story, who created the Rings of Power? The answer has three parts: Celebrimbor, a skilled Elven craftsman, his team of artisans called the Gwaith-i-Mírdain, and Sauron.

Lord of The Rings: Rings of Power has a pretty cool backstory that was touched on in The Fellowship of the Ring and even made it into Peter Jackson's live-action movie in 2001. So, most Lord of the Rings fans know this, but just to refresh your memory, Sauron created 20 Rings of Power and gave them to the different races of Middle-earth.

He didn't do it out of kindness, though — he wanted to control them. He gave nine to humans, seven to dwarves, three to the Elves, and kept the most powerful one for himself — the One Ring that could rule them all.

Annantar and the Elves of Eregion: Sauron secretly created the One Ring in his Mordor fortress in Lord of The Rings: Rings of Power. The other 19 Rings of Power were made by the elves, but not without Sauron's hidden influence.

After Morgoth's defeat at the end of the First Age, Sauron spent 1500 years rebuilding his magical powers and army, turning Mordor into a stronghold of evil. To control all beings, Sauron pretended to be friendly — disguised as Annatar, he infiltrated the Elves of Eregion. He secretly stirred up trouble among the elves and offered them magical knowledge, encouraging them to create the Rings of Power.

Celebrimbor: Celebrimbor, the finest smith, got to work and made three powerful rings: Narya, Nenya, and Vilya. Because he made them alone, these Rings of Power didn't fall under Sauron's direct control and didn't have the same bad effects on their owners like the other Rings of Power did. Still, all three were influenced by the Dark Lord's One Ring.

Sauron: According to the four books in Tolkien's main Middle-earth saga, The One Ring, sneaked into existence by Sauron in Mount Doom's fiery heart, could control the sixteen rings belonging to Dwarves and Men. Sauron's grip on the other rings wasn't solid, but he poured a lot of his own strength into the One Ring when he made it, a move that would later prove to be his undoing at the hands of Frodo Baggins.

What can we expect in season 2 of Lord of Lord of The Rings: Rings of Power

Season 1 of Lord of The Rings: Rings of Power introduced Sauron as Halbrand, a mysterious human character. He played a significant role in creating the Three Rings, and he even touches the special metal used to make them.

Galadriel and Elrond were also involved in the process. In season 2, Halbrand will return as Annatar, Sauron's true persona. He will help the Elven smiths of Eregion craft many more Rings of Power, not just the 20 from the original story. By the end, many of these powerful rings will likely exist.

Lord of The Rings: Rings of Power's second season along with all the old episodes from the first season is now available to stream on Prime Video.
