HBO Max's Love & Death is available on Netflix, and this has brought the series and the Candy Montgomery case to the forefront again. For those who don't know, the Candy Montgomery case shocked the Dallas suburb of Wylie in Texas, in 1980. On June 13, 1980, Candace Lynn Montgomery killed her neighbor, Betty Gore, with an axe.
Candy claimed self-defense because she claimed that Betty attacked her with the axe. Candy had confirmed her affair with Allan Gore, Betty's husband, which is why she attacked the former. The jury accepted Candy's self-defence argument and declared her not guilty. It seems that Allan left Wylie amidst Candy's trial and is believed to be living in Florida today.
Love & Death: What is the Candy Montgomery case about?
Texan woman Candy Montgomery had an affair with her neighbor Allan Gore in December 1978, when he was having marital problems with Betty. We see this affair in the first three episodes of HBO Max's Love & Death as well. However, Allan ended it approximately eight months in October 1979 after his relationship began to heal.
Despite ending the affair ending, things took a dark turn on the night of June 13, 1980. As Love & Death depicts, Allan was out of town for work, and Betty felt suspicous about him and Candy. Betty asked Candy when she visted the former's home, if she had an affair with Allan. An irate Betty attacked Candy with an axe when the latter confirmed the former's suspicions.
Allan informed the investigators about the affair, which is what alerted the authorities about Candy Montgomery's possible involvement. The authorities arrested Candy on June 26, 1980. Candy accepted killing Betty, but claimed self defence as Betty attacked her first. The jury accepted this and declared her not guilty on October 30, 1980, leading to her acquittal. However, Allan was nowhere in the court.
Where was Allan Gore during Candy's trial?

The last scene of the Love & Death finale, "Ssssshh" sees Candy and Allan bidding eachother good bye and expressing regrets. However, this did not happen in real life as he moved out of Wylie shortly after Betty's passing. Moreover, he was also married a woman around the time of Candy's trial. However, this marraige was also not long lasting.
Where is Allan today?
Allan is supposedly living in Sarasota, Florida. Gore has been private ever since Betty's death in 1980. After his short marraige, today, he is living with a domestic partner in Florida. More importantly, Allan doesn't have the custody of Bethany and Alisa, his and Betty's daughters. They went on to live with their maternal grandparents.
Where to watch the series?
The 2023 HBO Max series was the second project about the Candy Montgomery case, the Hulu series Candy released a year ago in 2022. The HBO Max starred Elizabeth Olsen as Candy, a role that got her a Golden Globe nomination that year.
"This riveting drama, written by David E. Kelley and directed by Lesli Linka Glatter, tells the true story of Candy and Pat Montgomery and Betty and Allan Gore – two churchgoing couples enjoying their smalltown Texas life… until an extramarital affair leads somebody to pick up an axe."
