When Love Island premiered on ITV2 in 2015, no one really anticipated it to become the UK's most popular reality dating show.
Each season, a new set of singles joins a somewhat posh villa in an unending quest for love and, maybe, a taste of stardom. They create relationships, take on daring tasks, and seek to captivate the audience as contestants woo potential beaus. While most of these relationships terminate after filming is over, a few couples have managed to transform their summer flings into something genuine and long-lasting.
Falling in love on camera, while the world sees, judges and comments upon, is not for everyone, but there are the islanders who have stayed together despite it all - starting lives together, getting married, and raising children. It is a reminder that true love can come out of the most unexpected of instances.
Which are the couples with such success stories from Love Island?
Over the years, an unexpected number of former competitors have had children together, transforming their villa romances into real-life family bonds.
Molly-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury
They are among the most talked-about couples from Love Island. They met during the 2019 season of the show. Molly arrived as a surprise, and thus changing things up for Tommy, but the two immediately became fan favourites. They welcomed their daughter, Bambi, in January 2023, and Tommy proposed in Ibiza later that year. Although they briefly parted in 2024, sources indicate they are back together as of early 2025.
Jamie Jewitt and Camilla Thurlow
The couple, from Season 3, got married in 2021 and have three children: Nell, Nora, and baby Brodie, who was born in May 2024.
Jessica Shears and Dom Lever
They have proven the sceptics wrong. Dom proposed in 2017 after they fell in love. They married in 2018 and have two sons.
Alex Bowen and Olivia Buckland
They ere actually the first Love Island couple to say "I do." Their wedding occurred in 2018, two years after they met on the show. They had their son Abel in June 2022 and have just revealed that they expect their second kid in 2025.
Cara De La Hoyde and Nathan Massey
They were winners on the show, had a rougher trip. They briefly separated in 2017 but reconnected and married the same year. They have subsequently welcomed two children: son Freddie and daughter Delilah.
Does the Love Island experiment work?
This probably isn’t the best, or most recommended, way to find true love or meet “the one”, but the perseverance exhibited by these couples who met on a reality show is quite the testament to Love Island’s legacy. Their willingness to make things work beyond the glamour, beyond the cameras and beyond the demands of showrunners and fans, prioritizing true connection, is what resulted in their success as couples.
It is true that most couples don’t even make it to the final episode, leave alone beyond the romantic bubble of the show. These success stories, however, give Love Island fans the hope that paradise isn’t just a place on TV. Rather, it is the direct outcome of perseverance, love and work.
You can stream Love Island UK live or on demand for free in the UK via ITVX (no subscription needed). If you are in the US, it is available a few days later on Hulu.
