Mad Unicron is the name of the latest Thai drama miniseries on Netflix. Mad Unicorn is slated to premiere exclusively on the streaming platform giant on May 29. The show is centered around the character of Santi, played by Ice-Natara Nopparatayapon, and chronicles his journey to pull his family out of the throes of poverty by venturing into an express delivery startup.

With the growing popularity of Asian shows such as the widely celebrated Squid Game, Netflix has now turned its focus to developing Asian stories, and Mad Unicorn serves as the latest example of this policy. Here's everything that we know about the upcoming Thai mini-series on Netflix.

What is Mad Unicorn all about?

Ice-Natara Nopparatayapon stars in Mad Unicorn as the protagonist Santi, who is determined to escape the ravages of poverty and provide his family with all the comforts that money can buy. The official description of the show, as per Netflix, reads:

"In Mad Unicorn, Ice-Natara Nopparatayapon (One for the Road, Delete) stars as Santi, the ambitious protagonist who dreams of lifting his family out of poverty. Armed with fluent Mandarin taught by his mother, Santi spots an opportunity in the express delivery industry and launches “Thunder Express.” When a ruthless tycoon, Kanin, portrayed by legendary actor and musician Ek-Thaneth Warakulnukroh (The Sea is Watching), betrays him, Santi teams up with a sharp-witted financier, Xiaoyu (Janeyeh Jiranorraphat), and an antisocial coding prodigy, Ruijie (Dr. Palang Rocksilp)."

Is there a trailer for Mad Unicorn?

The trailer effectively establishes the context of the upcoming Netflix mini-series against the backdrop of Bangkok's commercial hub. While the show is inspired by the real-life story of Thailand's first unicorn start-up, it has been directed by Nottapon Boonprakob of Come and See fame. The trailer hints that the show will be packed with thrilling, high-octane sequences balanced by heartfelt emotional moments.

Netflix Asia VP speaks about their content policy

Minyoung Kim is the Vice-President of Netflix Asia, and during the recent Netflix Asia Pacific Showcase in Tokyo, Kim outlined the streaming platform's policy for harbouring a lot more Asian content. This comes after the success of Squid Game and the increased demand for Asian content per se. As reported by Variety, Kim explained:

"WWhen I commissioned ‘Squid Game,’ we were never trying to find a global show. We always look for stories that are going to have an impact in the local market, that is going to really touch our local audience.”

She further stated:

"We’re not trying to copy the success of ‘Squid Game.' We always look for titles that are going to work really well in the local market and entertain our audiences in the local market. When it’s a locally authentic story that is able to create the emotion that can really work well universally, I think that’s when you really see a show travels far more."

Mad Unicorn drops on May 29 on Netflix.
