Oscar-winning director Morgan Neville's Man on the Run is an Amazon MGM Studios documentary in production, which looks back at one of the most interesting eras of McCartney's life.

After the breakup of The Beatles, the world wondered whether he could exist on his own. McCartney reinvented himself through Wings, his domestic life with Linda, and a series of artistic experiments that would come full circle and redefine his legacy.

The documentary vows a close and intimate examination, utilizing previously unseen archive films, home reel-to-reel tape recordings, and archives from McCartney himself. Executive producing Man on the Run is Paul McCartney himself.

It's not a rock documentary, but a journey back to a rambunctious yet glorious era that redrawn the map of contemporary music.

Since Man on the Run is being directed by Morgan Neville, whose resume now also includes 20 Feet from Stardom and Won't You Be My Neighbor?, the stakes are higher. Neville's ability to ground larger-than-life figures in reality is perfectly complemented by McCartney's post-Beatles makeover. Rather than recount the well-documented history of the Beatles, Neville concentrates on McCartney as a husband, father, and frontman.

Neville has already demonstrated the depth to which he can mine historical material to craft a tale that comfortably straddles the divide between eras. Man on the Run will do the same with McCartney's treasure trove of forgotten gems. Fans can anticipate a blend of nostalgia, anecdotal reminiscence, and fresh insight into McCartney's legendary status.

A deep dive into the 1970s McCartney

The 1970s were a testing phase in McCartney's career. Critics at the time demoted his solo first releases and Wings as lightweight compared to The Beatles, but years have borne witness to their value. " Band on the Run" and "Venus and Mars," for example, dominated the charts while also showcasing McCartney's unrelenting experimentation spirit.

Man on the Run records the highs and lows, lifting the lid on his fight to remain one step ahead, on his close relationship with Linda McCartney, and on reassembling a new band from scratch. Unlike the Beatles' saga told ad infinitum, this film is about McCartney's fight to regain creative control and break free from the shadow of his previous band.

Production and creative support

The film is presented to us by Tremolo Productions, MPL (Paul McCartney's corporate unit), and Polygram Entertainment, funded by Amazon MGM Studios. This sort of collaboration guarantees both artistic integrity and unprecedented access to personal material that few, outside his inner circle, have ever had the chance to see.

According to Deadline, Man on the Run has been in pre-production since 2023, carefully weaving together film and tape that will tell the story. Proper planning ensures the documentary will not make shallow overtures toward nostalgia, but will provide an authoritative account of McCartney's path in the 1970s.

Release plans: What we know and what's speculative

While "Man on the Run" is reportedly streaming only on Prime Video worldwide, no release date has been announced to that effect. Rumor has it that February 25, 2026, has been mentioned in fan forums as the potential release date.

However, no release date announcement by Amazon MGM has been made. Reports have indicated that the premiere is probable at the 2025 Telluride Film Festival, but neither the festival nor the studio has officially confirmed the agenda so far.

What appears to be in the works is a brief theatrical release before the streaming premiere, a strategy that Amazon Studios has previously employed for its prestige documentaries. Additionally, gossip regarding a spin-off business, such as a Wings book or merchandise, is rampant, but no official word has been made by McCartney or Amazon.

Why Man on the Run matters?

Paul McCartney's tale has been told many times, yet "Man on the Run" is exceptional in its focus on the decade Paul needed to reinvent himself. Combining family life, experimentation, and the weight of carrying on from The Beatles, the documentary is an intimate, complex examination of one of music's icons.

With Morgan Neville at the helm and McCartney himself providing the keys to his archives, Man on the Run is shaping up to be more than just a documentary; it’s a cultural event. Whether you’re a lifelong Beatles fan or simply curious about how legends rebuild after seismic change, this film will offer a revealing look at one of music history’s boldest reinventions.
