Mare of Easttown was a huge success when it premiered on HBO in April 2021. The crime drama follows detective Mare Sheehan as she tries to solve the murder of a young mother while dealing with her own personal struggles.

Created by Brad Ingelsby and directed by Craig Zobel, the show had seven episodes and was originally meant to be a miniseries. Since its ending, fans have hoped for more. But recently, one of the stars of the show, Julianne Nicholson, gave a less-than-hopeful update, raising doubts about the possibility of Mare of Easttown season 2.

While speaking to Deadline, Julianne Nicholson, who played Lori Ross, Mare’s best friend in the series, shared her thoughts on the show and its possible return. Her comments, although affectionate, didn’t confirm anything about the future of Mare of Easttown.

When Deadline asked Nicholson if she still stays in touch with Mare of Easttown creator, Brad Ingelsby, she said,

"Yeah, I do. Brad, bless Brad. I love him so much. And yeah, we check in with each other every now and again."

When Deadline asked if there was a possibility for a future installment of Mare of Easttown, Nicholson said,

"Who knows? I think he’s a huge talent, such a nice guy, huge talent. And obviously that show was a hugely amazing one to film and yeah, I loved being a part of that show."

Nicholson’s reply shows her love for the series, but it also shows that there’s still no official plan for a second season. She didn’t say yes or no, leaving the possibility open, but nothing was confirmed.

The show earned high praise for its story, characters, and emotional depth. The series featured Kate Winslet in the lead role as Mare Sheehan, a detective in Easttown, Pennsylvania, dealing with a complex murder case and personal turmoil.

The rest of the cast includes Jean Smart as Helen Fahey, Angourie Rice as Siobhan Sheehan, David Denman as Frank Sheehan, Neal Huff as Father Dan Hastings, Guy Pearce as Richard Ryan, Cailee Spaeny as Erin McMenamin, John Douglas Thompson as Chief Carter, Joe Tippett as John Ross, Evan Peters as Detective Colin Zabel, Sosie Bacon as Carrie Layden, and James McArdle as Deacon Mark Burton.

The show has been directed by Craig Zobel and executive produced by Paul Lee, Mark Roybal, Kate Winslet, Brad Ingelsby, Craig Zobel, Gavin O’Connor, Gordon Gray, and Ron Schmidt. The show was collaboratively produced by the companies Zobot Projects, Mayhem Pictures, Juggle Productions, Low Dweller Productions, and wiip.

When the show first aired, it became a success almost overnight. The finale brought in over 1.5 million viewers in the U.S., and it scored a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It also earned 16 Emmy nominations and won four.

Despite all the praise, a second season is yet to be confirmed. That could partly be because the show was initially meant to be a limited series. However, like many other miniseries in the past, Mare of Easttown could be expanded, but only if the right story comes along and the cast and crew agree to return.

Mare of Easttown is streaming on HBO Max.
