Another murder is set to trouble our crime-solving sleuths in the fifth season of Only Murders in the Building. The show is set to premiere its fifth season on Hulu on September 9 with the first three episodes, followed by a weekly release schedule.

Season 4 wrapped up with Martin Shorts Oliver Putnam and Meryl Streep's Loretta getting married. After that, the trio finds another murder mystery—but this time it's the much-loved character, the Arconian doorman Lester.

As fans prepare for the show's premiere and Lester's murder investigation, Martin Short talks about the show's future in a conversation with Variety.

The only rule guiding the Arconian murder investigators has been that they would only take up murder investigations of murders that have happened in the Arconia. Now that the investigators have solved four murders, one must start to question how many more people can die within the building.

Even though the investigation takes the characters to different places outside the Arconia, the murders being investigated have always occurred inside the building. At some point, viewers are forced to question the narrative foundation of the show and the number of murders happening in the building. This also calls into question the future of Only Murders in the Building after a certain point.

When asked about the number of murders that can still take place in the building and, consequently, the number of seasons the show will have, Martin Short had an interesting answer.

Emmy nominee Martin Short explained that the showrunners are extremely aware that the show cannot go on forever. They do not intend to continue creating Only Murders in the Building beyond the point where they feel it's past its time.

For a show like Only Murders in the Building to be renewed for five seasons is a big deal, according to Short. He explained that the brilliance of the show—the writing, the direction, and the passion that has gone into making it—has allowed it to reach the heights of popularity it has achieved.

"I think that the reality is, you know when it feels like it’s past its time. I think everyone’s amazed that it’s gone this long. This is a long time in streaming to go five years."

Short also highlighted the uncertainty of the streaming market, where some great shows are canceled after five seasons while others go on for ten years. He emphasized taking one step at a time, giving the best to the present, and being open to the possibility that things might come to an end soon.

Nevertheless, there is plenty to look forward to, since Only Murders in the Building is returning soon with a fresh murder mystery. Additionally, there are some new additions to the cast, including Renée Zellweger, Christoph Waltz, Keegan-Michael Key, Téa Leoni, Logan Lerman, Dianne Wiest, Jermaine Fowler, and Beanie Feldstein.
