When it comes to big-budget TV, most people think of Netflix’s Stranger Things, and for good reason. Season 4 reportedly cost about $30 million per episode, delivering feature-length chapters loaded with jaw-dropping effects, sprawling sets, and fan-favorite character arcs. But here’s a twist worthy of the Upside Down: Marvel’s Secret Invasion somehow cost even more per episode and gave audiences far less in return.

The six-part Disney+ series, starring Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, carried a staggering $212 million price tag, roughly $35 million per installment. That’s more than Stranger Things at its peak and even pricier than many Marvel blockbusters. Yet instead of Hawkins-sized set pieces, audiences got installments that sometimes barely made it past the 35-minute mark, with credits.

On paper, Secret Invasion should’ve been Marvel’s Stranger Things moment: Skrulls morphing into anyone, political paranoia, massive reveals. In reality, it became more of a behind-the-scenes horror story, with reports of chaotic production, high staff turnover, and internal disputes devouring the budget faster than a Demogorgon on prom night.

Meanwhile, Stranger Things keeps proving how to turn cash into cultural dominance, killer visuals, fan-favorite moments, and an emotional core that actually sticks. Secret Invasion felt torn between gritty espionage and superhero spectacle, never fully nailing either. In the end, Marvel’s $212 million gamble outspent Stranger Things but didn’t come close to its magic.
