Matlock has turned out to be one of the most-watched new shows on television. The story of a retired lawyer who joins a law firm to avenge her daughter’s death has resonated well with the audience.
The first season of the legal drama aired on CBS from September 2024 to April 2025, and featured the likes of Kathy Bates, Skye P. Marshall, Jason Ritter, David Del Rio, and Leah Lewis. We might get to see some exciting new additions to the cast as showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman is keen on getting two more talented actors onboard for the second season.
As per an interview given to TVLine, Urman wants to cast Melanie Lynskey and Edwin Hodge as guest stars in Matlock Season 2. The two actors share a personal connection with the show as their real-life partners are already a part of the ensemble.

During the interview, Jennie Snyder Urman stated that she wants both Melanie Lynskey and Edwin Hodge to play fun characters in Matlock Season 2, and she already has some plans for their introduction in the show:
“Obviously, I want Melanie Lynskey to come on and play a fun character, and I want Edwin Hodge to come on and play a fun character. I’ve got a lot of plans!”
Melanie Lynskey is married to Jason Ritter, who plays Julian Markston, a senior partner of the law firm in the show. The Emmy Award-nominated actress is known for playing Shauna in Yellowjackets, Rose in Two and a Half Men, and Michelle Pierson in Togetherness.
Her film credits include The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Sweet Home Alabama, and I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore. Lynskey has also expressed her desire to star in Matlock. During an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in February 2025, the actress said:
“I’m trying. I don’t think I can try any harder without being weird and scary. Listen, I’d love it. I would do anything.”
Her husband, Jason Ritter, is also open to the idea, as he said in a conversation with Decider in April:
“I’ve passed the word on. I would love to see that and Melanie would love it. Everybody who works on Matlock would love that, too. So I think when all the pieces are aligned. I think we can call it inevitable.”
Coming to Edwin Hodge, the actor is married to Skye P. Marshall, who plays Olympia Lawrence in the legal drama. He is famous for portraying Special Agent Ray Cannon in FBI: Most Wanted, which recently finished airing on CBS. He has also made episodic appearances on several shows over the years, including All Rise, Rosewood, Private Practice, CSI: Miami, and Grey's Anatomy.
If the makers are able to get both Lynskey and Hodge onboard for Matlock Season 2, it will surely be interesting to see them sharing the screen with their real-life spouses. The upcoming season will premiere on CBS in the Fall schedule this year.
The series tells the story of Madeline “Matty” Kingston, who joins Jacobson Moore, a law firm that helped cover the tracks of the pharmaceutical company responsible for her daughter’s death by opioid overdose. As Matty gathers clues about the suspects, she wins her colleagues’ trust by helping them on various legal cases.
Matlock is available to stream on Paramount+.
