There aren't many shows that went through the big breakout experience for their first season, only to suffer one of the biggest sophomore slumps there is in the next one, as True Detective did. An HBO mystery thriller that first premiered in 2014, the mystery thriller was one of the first contributors to the breakout of Matthew McConaughey, a phenomenon that is more popularly known as 'The McConaissance.'

Since then, Matthew McConaughey has played acclaimed roles one after the other and has even received an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for his performance. However, it appears even McConaughey has never forgotten his roots and the roles that contributed to his breakout.

In a recent conversation with Variety, McConaughey expressed that he would love to return as Rust Cohle to True Detective. There's a big "but" at the end of that sentence, so keep reading to find out exactly what it would take for McConaughey to return to his role of the philosophizing detective.

True Detective has been on a decade-long journey of trying to achieve the greatness of Season 1

True Detective has been trying for the longest time to achieve the kind of fire that the first season managed to light for a long time, and even though Season 4 was somewhat promising, it didn't quite achieve that effect. Even McConaughey, who led the first season, has been candid about the fact that his season was the best that HBO has delivered in the twisted mystery series so far:

"My favorite season — and I feel like I can say this objectively — is Season 1. I happen to be in that one, so I thought that was incredible, incredible television and a great series. "

He went on to add:

"I watched it weekly, like everyone else, on Sunday night, and that was an event for me. And I got to sit back and enjoy that. I loved the water cooler talk on Monday morning. Even though I made it, I sort of forgot what was going to happen next. It was one of the great events in TV."

Even though this admission might come off as subjective, given that he was a part of Season 1, the greatness of the first season has been widely accepted to be above all of the others that came after it.

Now, Nicolas Cage is set to take over the lead for Season 5. While fans are hoping that this time around the show manages to achieve that greatness again, there is also the desire to witness Matthew McConaughey take over the lead once again.

In a recent conversation with Variety, McConaughey was asked about the possibility and what he thought about returning as Rust Cohle on True Detective.

To everyone's surprise, McConaughey responded that he would love to return to the series. He explained that when he decides to take over a character, he looks for the character's inner monologue. This is something essential to him, as it helps him understand who the character is behind all the dialogues and all the choices and the subtexts. It helps him understand the character and how they make their choices in life.

For Rust Cohle, McConaughey explains, the monologue was always crystal clear to him. He explains this when he says:

"And you talk about monologues. Well, Rust Cohle had a monologue. He talked about everything that was inside him, and he didn’t care if you were listening or not. There’s freedom in that."

McConaughey makes it clear exactly why he would love to return as Rust Cohle, despite the setbacks that True Detective has faced over the years.

However, he had one big condition as well. According to him, the reason why the first season did as well as it did was because the script had "fire and originality," which allowed him to take Rust Cohle's monologue and deliver the record-shattering performance that he did. So, if he were to return to True Detective, it would be for a script that had the same, if not more, fire and originality as the first season's script.

"We nailed that first season. But if it’s a script like that first one, with that fire and originality, I’d do it."

It's a high-stakes condition, but there's a reason why Matthew McConaughey's Rust Cohle continues to be hailed as the greatest lead for True Detective, and bringing him back might just be worth every effort for the show.
