Maxton Hall might be filmed in Germany, but the story itself takes place in England. Yep, that’s the fun twist! The Prime Video teen drama is technically supposed to be set in Germany, yet everything from the names to the settings screams British boarding school vibes.

The show takes place at an elite private school somewhere in England, just a few hours away from London. So while the characters themselves do speak German, the show, on the other hand, belongs entirely to Britain’s posh countryside.

Here’s how that geography really works.

Welcome to Maxton Hall: A British school told through German eyes

Okay, let's get one thing clear: Maxton Hall is set in England, but the show itself comes from a German production company. Sounds confusing at first, right? But once you get into it, it totally lights up a lightbulb in your mind.

The school is supposed to be this fancy English boarding school with old buildings, huge lawns, and students with rich-kid issues. You’ll hear characters talk about pounds instead of euros, dream about studying at Oxford, and even have casual references to other British cities.

However, everything’s in German. The actors, the dialogues, and so much more are all in German because the series is made and produced in Germany. The show is based on Mona Kasten’s “Save Me” trilogy, which was also written in German but set in England.

It’s as if the show is pretending to be British while proudly showcasing its German roots and culture at the same time. And honestly, that’s part of what makes the show so unique. It completely bridges two cultures without ever really choosing either side.

If you look closely, numerous context clues reveal the English setting. The car number plates look exactly like UK ones, the street signs are British, and the countryside feels very English, and it's all kind of perfect. Basically, the vibe is England, but the spirit behind it? Very German.

Filming in Germany, set in England: How Maxton Hall gets the best of both worlds

Even though Maxton Hall is set in England, most of it was actually filmed in Germany. The main campus you see on-screen isn’t a real English school at all, but it’s Marienburg Castle near Hanover. The castle’s hallways, gardens, and staircases fit the whole elite boarding school look so well that you’d barely notice it’s not British.

When Ruby, James, and the others talk about going to Oxford or visiting London, those moments remind you that the story takes place in England. In fact, there’s even a scene where they drive to London instead of flying, which pretty much confirms that Maxton Hall isn’t set across borders, but it’s within driving distance of the city.

It’s also interesting how German productions often set their stories in England or the US. That’s because audiences love that international feel, and it makes the story more relatable and a little bit more dreamy. Maxton Hall hops on that trend but pushes it further, keeping the language German but letting the world itself stay unmistakably British.

Maxton Hall lives in this cool in-between space. It's set in England’s upper-class world but brought to life by German filmmakers and actors. It’s filmed mostly in Germany, but it's dressed up to look like an English boarding school, just a car ride from London.

The show proves that storytelling can cross borders without ever losing its charm, and mind you, I think it does that beautifully.
