Natalie Morales joined the cast of the long-running medical drama as Dr. Monica Beltran and quickly became a fan favorite. However, in the 22nd season of the series, we see that she will no longer be a part of the show as her character dies after the explosion happens at the hospital.

Natalie Morales’ reaction to her character’s death in Grey’s Anatomy

While discussing her reaction when she was first informed about her character’s death, Natalie Morales’ reaction was not as one would expect it to be. She received a phone call from Meg Marinis, who helms the show. In the phone call, Morales was asked to come back for Season 22 of Grey’s Anatomy. However, hearing that she needs to return for another season of the series was not what she was expecting.

She told Meg that she thought her character had died. She said, “Oh, I thought maybe she would have died”. On hearing her words, Meg Marinis added that her character was indeed going to die. Morales also added that she thought that as the hospital blew up, some characters were undoubtedly going to die. It cannot be denied that Dr. Monica’s character became a fan favorite.

The viewers enjoyed her storyline eagerly. Hence, her departure from the show would be heartbreaking for the viewers. Natalie Morales herself pointed out that the fans are “going to be pissed”. She is definitely right about this. However, she also added that when Meg Marinis explained the scene about her character’s death, she felt that it was “right”.

She also added that the storyline “makes sense” to her. For a series like Grey’s Anatomy, the deaths of characters are undoubtedly going to be a crucial part of the show. It is because the series comes with a huge cast. Through the years, many crucial characters have died. It has led to the addition of many new characters. This aspect helps to keep the storyline fresh and prevent any monotonous feeling.

The manner in which the series handles Dr. Monica’s death shows why the series is still such a beloved show. Keeping the viewership strong through the years is not an easy task. However, Grey’s Anatomy does so with ease. It is because the storyline is fresh. The creators always bring new and intriguing elements each time. Before drying, Dr. Monica keeps on helping her patients. After the explosion, she gets stuck under the light rig.

Braving the excruciating pain, Dr. Monica kept on guiding Jules through the surgery. Her goal was to make sure Dylan would survive. She navigated Jules through it all and helped Dylan survive. In the end, the firefighters arrive. They try to help Dr. Monica, but it is already too late for her. Her injuries were too serious for her to survive.

Even after facing such a difficult situation, with the knowledge that death is imminent, Dr. Monica kept on pushing forward for her patient. It truly showed how dedicated she was as a doctor. The whole scene resonated deeply through Natalie Morales' performance.
