Mayor of Kingstown is one of Taylor Sheridan dramas, which is currently airing its fourth season. The show follows the McLusky family, specifically, Michael McLusky, who maintains the peace between gangs, criminals, and the police in a town that has no order in the first place.

Unlike most of Sheridan's shows, Mayor of Kingstown isn't exactly a Western drama. It is more of a pure crime drama given the kind of stories and violence it deals with. Still, fans have shown the show love, but surprisingly, the show holds a bizarre Rotten Tomatoes score in comparison to other Sheridan dramas.

Mayor of Kingstown has a strange Rotten Tomatoes score

Mayor of Kingstown doesn't have the occasional humor of Tulsa King, the family bonding moments of Yellowstone, and is quite different from most Sheridan dramas. The show is known for its characters who are brutal, and whose lives are warped in violence everyday. While that has managed to win over fans till now, earning it a 85% on the Popcornmeter, critics have only given it 53% as per the Tomatometer.

It is a little bizarre that a show so well-liked by audiences has such a low critics' score. There could be various reasons behind it. For instance, as ScreenRant reports, the show's constant gloomy, bloody, and violent setting made some critics feel that its monotony, something that has been done before. Moreover, some critics felt that the show shies away from addressing deeper topics, and covers them up by focusing more on violence.

Critics also reportedly felt that the show focuses too much on characters who don't have any regard for their own lives, and thus multiple deaths in the show don't mean much after a while. After a certain point, the extreme violence seems normal, and the lack of originality in the story makes it not-so-interesting to keep watching.

Despite all the criticism, and the low Rotten Tomatoes score, the show has been a success. Fans seem to like the violence, even though it's highly gritty. Thus while it is strange, Mayor of Kingstown's low Rotten Tomatoes score doesn't exactly affect its success as a show, and will likely not affect its future if the fans keep supporting it like they have for four seasons.

Mayor of Kingstown stars Jeremy Renner as Michael McLusky, Hugh Dillon as Lt. Ian Ferguson, Tobi Bamtefa as Deverin Washington, Taylor Handley as Lt. Kyle McLusky, Derek Webster as Stevie, Hamish Allan-Headley as Robert Sawyer, Necar Zadegan as Evelyn Foley, Laura Benanti as Cindy Stephens, Lennie James as Frank Moses, and Edie Falco as Nina Hobbs, among others.

The show is executive-produced by Taylor Sheridan, Hugh Dillon, Jeremy Renner, Antoine Fuqua, David C. Glasser, Ronald Burkle, Bob Yari, and Michael Friedman. The production companies behind the show are Paramount Television Studios, Bosque Ranch Productions, 101 Studios, and Square Head Pictures.

The first three episodes of Mayor of Kingstown Season 4 are streaming on Paramount+ and the remaining seven episodes will be released weekly on Sundays until December 28, 2025.
