Veteran TV writer-producer Michael Sloan died on August 13, 2025. Sloan was the co-creator of the popular 1985 action drama series The Equalizer with Richard Lindheim.
Sloan’s family shared the news on the Crestwood Funeral Services website. While the family did not reveal the cause of death, they did share that the 78-year-old veteran writer died peacefully. They shared:
"Michael Fred Sloan, 78, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2025."

The Equalizer co-creator, Michael Sloan, dies at 78
Sloan was born in New York City on October 14, 1946, and moved to England soon after, spending most of his childhood there. From an early age, he was interested in storytelling, and it was in England that he began his journey in the art form. His first popular job, after returning to the USA, was writing an episode for Columbo titled "Now You See Him".
As per his obituary, Sloan was hardworking, creative, and a good father and husband, and was also loving toward animals.
An excerpt from the obituary reads as:
"Michael was larger-than-life, known for his charm, creativity, and dedication. Always quick with a joke, his sense of humor lit up every room he entered. Through his ideas, generosity, and talent, Michael left a lasting impression on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him."
Sloan’s work with Lindheim in creating the crime drama was in many ways groundbreaking. The mid-1980s series also gave us one of the most successful film franchises with The Equalizer, starring Denzel Washington.
Other than The Equalizer, Michael Sloan had also written for numerous popular projects that included murder mysteries and detective stories, such as Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys, Quincy M.E., which got him his Emmy nomination, to sci-fi shows like Battlestar Galactica.
He is also known for writing the action-adventure film, The Return of the Man From U.N.C.L.E. He was married to actress Melissa Anderson for thirty-five years, whom he met while writing various episodes for The New Alfred Hitchcock Presents.
Apart from being a popular Hollywood writer, Sloan has also written for the stage. One of his thrillers, titled Underground, was produced for London’s West End theatre.
Michael Sloan will always be remembered for his contribution to the industry and the field of creativity, as his works continue to inspire numerous future writers.
