Michelle Monaghan, who has played some of the most intense roles in True Detective and The White Lotus, is leading a new Netflix drama about a high-school hockey team on its quest to rebuild themselves after a tragic event.

The series is produced by 21 Laps Entertainment, Shawn Levy’s company that also produced Stranger Things, and will consist of eight episodes. It is a creation by Nick Naveda and managed by Bridget Bedard.

The action of the story occurs in a small fictional town known as South Dorothy, Minnesota, where the main character, Harper Sullivan, portrayed by Michelle Monaghan, is tasked with offering support to her town and a shattered hockey team devastated by a tragic bus crash.

The shooting is supposed to begin in Vancouver in January 2026 with the working title being The Sticks. The show promises a blend of emotionally told stories, small-town feel, and sports drama that Netflix subscribers often enjoy.

Why Michelle Monaghan is the perfect lead

Michelle Monaghan has always excelled at portraying tough but tender characters, the ones you can't help but root for. In her new Netflix show, she stars as a widow who resorts to being the emotional centre of her community after a devastating loss. She is not only a coach but she is the one whom everyone turns to in times of hope and guidance.

The position requires one to combine grief, grit, warmth, and humor (and in some cases all three). Her past performances show that Michelle Monaghan can seamlessly transition between cold weakness and silent strength, which makes her the ideal choice. The show is staged in the world of hockey and likely, the combination of emotional and physical battles bring about a strong balance of heart and intensity.

It also introduces something new to the mix: a woman at the head of a sports story, demonstrating what teamwork, healing and second chances can look like when a female lead is in charge.

The creative team

The series is produced by 21 Laps Entertainment, the company of Shawn Levy, which has produced massive Netflix hits that are visually impressive. However, this time the story seems more grounded. Both, the creator Nick Naveda and the showrunner Bridget Bedard center their interests on a character-driven drama that will promise the show to be emotional and real simultaneously.

Having Trey Edward Shults direct the initial few episodes, the audience can anticipate unfiltered and human scenes that render the sports background personal and significant. This team would be able to provide a series that is moving and also cinematic.

What to expect

The tone of the show is predicted to be a mix of heart, hope, and actual emotions. It will center on themes like loss, resilience, community, and how teamwork can heal people. The plot starts with the tragic bus crash that killed one of the favorite coaches leaving behind broken players and families. Such an arrangement inherently introduces drama, including rivalries, guilt, blame, and the attempts to restore trust.

However, in the hands of Michelle Monaghan and a powerful creative team, the series will not be dull and gloomy. It will most probably be warm, funny, and there will be glimpses of moments when people gradually recover, making mistakes, fighting, and celebrating small victories in between.

Aesthetically one can expect to see icy hockey rinks, breakneck game-action, and emotional locker room scenes, juxtaposed with domestic community settings such as diners and town halls. In case the show concentrates on its characters rather than the sport itself, it may attract even those who do not watch sports dramas in general.
