Mike Flanagan first discussed making a TV series based on Stephen King's The Dark Tower book series in 2022. Deadline reported then that Mike Flanagan, Trevor Macy, and Amazon Studios were considering adapting the book series into a TV series. However, it's been three years since Flanagan talked about the show or gave us updates.

With Mike Flanagan's The Life of Chuck releasing soon and the Carrie series in development, it has been a busy few years for the filmmaker. No news or updates about The Dark Tower series feel like perhaps the show had been dropped, which wouldn't be the first time that happened. Glen Mazzara had written a pilot for a Dark Tower series for Amazon/MRC, but that wasn't taken forward.

Now, in 2025, as Mike Flanagan is giving interviews for the promotion of The Life of Chuck, he has shared an update that revealed his ambitious plans regarding The Dark Tower series.

Mike Flanagan's The Dark Tower series, if it gets made, wouldn't be the first adaptation of the Stephen King book series to be released. In 2017, a film, The Dark Tower, starring Matthew McConaughey and Idris Alba, was released, which was loosely based on the book series. However, the film wasn't a huge hit, and thus a TV series about Roland Deschain, a gunslinger's quest to find the nexus of all universes, the Dark Tower, might be just what the fans need.

Back in 2022, Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy had sat down for an interview with Deadline and were asked if they were developing anything based on well-known IP. In response, Mike Flanagan had said,

"You’re the first person we’re saying it to, but yes. Predating our deal with Amazon, we acquired the rights to The Dark Tower, which if you know anything about me, you know it has been my Holy Grail of a project for most of my life. We actually have those rights carved out of our Amazon deal, which doesn’t mean that they can’t or won’t get behind it at some point — you don’t know. But that’s something we’ve been developing ourselves and are really passionate about finally getting it up on its feet at some point."

When asked further questions, Flanagan expressed,

"I wrote a pilot, we view it as a as a series that’s going at least five seasons. And having lived with this project as long as I have, I have an enormous amount of it worked out in my brain. But I have a pilot script I’m thrilled with and a very detailed outline for the first season and a broader outline for the subsequent seasons....
... I’ve dreamed about this. That first shot which comes right off at the first incredible sentence of the first book, The Gunslinger, I’ve had that image just rattling around in my head since I was an undergrad. It’s going to have to get out of there eventually, I really need to get it out of my head.
The pilot script is one of my favorite things I’ve ever gotten to work on. It’s been surreal working on that. So we’ve been floored and grateful that Stephen King trusts us with such an undertaking, something so precious to him, and we hope to find the right partners to realize it."

No other news or updates about the series had been released in the three years that followed the Deadline interview. However, in June 2025, Mike Flanagan finally gave an update to ComicBook.

While discussing his upcoming film, The Life of Chuck, the filmmaker was also asked if The Dark Tower is still in the works. In response, he said,

“It’s not that I’ve put it down. It’s just that the thing is so big, it’s like building an oil tanker,”

Flanagan elaborated,

“We’ve been moving it forward this whole time. It’s just, that’s how big it is. It’s constantly in the works, and you better believe as often as you guys may want to ask about it, Stephen King is asking me about it more, and I’m not gonna let him down.”

It is unknown when the The Dark Tower TV series' production will start, but it is definitely in the works. Stay tuned for updates.
