Holden and Bill in Mindhunter enter the prison of Virginia for the interview and surrender their firearms and badges under standard security rules. They are then given access to the interview room where they meet a serial killer, Monte Rissell, who has raped and killed 5 women. He seems to be hostile and uncooperative while also trying to provoke these officers intentionally. He asked for a six-pack of Big Red soda before agreeing to talk.

The interview then progresses to reveal some disturbing life stories of Rissell as he opens up more about his past. He confesses that he got into trouble for the first time for raping four girls in a juvenile facility in Florida. He added that he didn't kill them and was just 14 years old by then. When he was released from prison, he attempted to live a normal life, holding a job and having a girlfriend, while also attending the mandated therapy. But when his girlfriend broke up with him via letter, something snapped within him. He drove to her college to see her and find her with another man. That is when his older self crept up within him, and that night, he abducted a woman, dragging her to the woods, killing and raping her.

This reopened the way to madness within him again, and he stabbed and raped several women after that. They realized that Rissel's mind is fragmented and is controlled by temper and rage.

On the drive back from the prison, the agents argue about what they’ve learned, and this ends abruptly when they are slammed by another car, which shakes them both and also suggests how their profession has also impacted their personal behavior.
