The third chapter in Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan's Monster anthology, titled Monster: The Ed Gein Story, is finally available to stream on Netflix. This chilling chapter focuses on the killer who has redefined the American horror genre. Ed Gein's story is one of the most bone-chilling stories, and the fact that it still influences American media and Hollywood is truly fascinating.
Portraying such a horrifying story is never easy, but the talented ensemble put together to bring Ed Gein's story to life, everything that shaped him, and everything that was affected by the "Butcher of Plainfield" makes this task look almost easy.
So, here's a guide through the cast of the Netflix show and the characters they're playing in Monster: The Ed Gein Story.
A Cast and Character Guide through Netflix's Monster: The Ed Gein Story
Ed Gein appeared to be almost normal from the outside: a mild-mannered fellow who was homebound, but beneath that somewhat awkward persona hid something much darker. Here is a look at the cast that brought the notorious killer from Plainfield's story to life.
Charlie Hunnam as the notorious killer Ed Gein

Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan had only one person in mind when casting the leading actor in the third chapter of their anthology series. A specific paparazzi picture of Charlie Hunnam reminded them of Gein in more ways than one. Murphy revealed to have received the easiest yes from Hunnam for the role.
Hunnam was previously seen in projects such as Sons of Anarchy, Children of Men, Crimson Peak, The Lost City of Z, and Shantaram, but nothing could've prepared him for playing this character.
"The more I got into learning about Ed, the more it became clear how big the distance was between who I am in my regular life and who Ed was"
Nevertheless, once he signed up for Monster: The Ed Gein Story, he got completely immersed in the character, what made him tick, and everything that made the serial killer who he was.
Laurie Metcalf as Augusta Gein, Ed's mother

The second most important character who needed to be understood for Ed Gein's story was Laurie Metcalf's Augusta Gein, Ed's mother. A domineering woman who kept Ed and his brother Henry isolated, teaching them that women and booze would make them immoral. As per Hunnam, Gein was himself playing a character who:
It was what Ed thought that his mother wanted him to be. It wasn’t an authentic voice that lived in him. It was this persona.
The four-time Emmy winner was previously seen in Lady Bird, Hacks, Three Tall Women, Scream 2, and Roseanne.
Suzanna Son as Adeline Watkins, a kindred spirit for Ed

Apart from Ed's strict and domineering mother, he has only one other female companion. Suzanna Son, previously seen in Red Rocket and The Idol, plays Adeline, who had known Ed for almost 20 years and was his only companion in Plainfield. Somehow, in her own way, she was almost equally disturbed. Obsessive about death, she was the one who told Ed about most of the killers who later went on to serve as his idols, as Brennan explained.
"Certain images and certain ideas, once you see them, you can’t unsee them. When Ed chose Adeline, they show each other these things. They can’t unsee them. And slowly begin this descent into darker and darker stuff."
