The episode reframes his entire life and shows how love and betrayal have transformed him into the man we see him to be in Moon River.
The episode opens with a long flashback, and we see Han-chul being a gentle and idealistic young man who was deeply in love with his neighbor, Jang-jeong. To protect and love her, he becomes a royal soldier, fulfilling his promise.
He earns the respect and trust of the king by saving the king's life when he was almost killed. He hides the king in his home while Jang-Jeong nurses him back to health. However, the twist comes when the king becomes obsessed with Jang-jeong and tells Han-chul that he, a king, can protect her better, leading Han-chul to surrender before him. The girl also agrees to the proposal to save herself and Han-chul. They eventually give birth to Lee Un.
Eventually, the palace offers Jang-jeong no protection, and the king, to secure the throne, accuses Jang-jeong of adultery and decides she must die. Han-chul reminds him of his promise to protect her always; however, the king admits that power is supreme to him.
Han-chul decides to save his love anyhow and stages Jan-jeong's death by poison while moving her to the mountains. However, she never recovers from the trauma of being separated from her infant son. All of the events lead to Han-chul's fury, where he ends up killing the king, triggering the Gyesa incident.
According to Gyesa, the throne goes to Lee Gang's father, being a politically safer choice. This becomes the moment when Han-chul stops being a human and becomes a monster.
