"More characters that have to leave us" — Yellowjackets star Sophie Nélisse opens up on more deaths in upcoming episodes

Yellowjackets continues to shock and awe the audience with Season 3, and the show's star Sophie Nélisse has given a tongue-in-cheek forewarning that there is more to come. In Episode 4, the audience was left dumfounded when Lottie, played by Simone Kessell, was found dead under suspicious circumstances.

Yellowjackets revolves around a group of teenagers who survived a plane crash but is yet to shake off the trauma of the incident and its aftermath in adult life. As the seasons go on, secrets are revealed from when they were stranded in the wilderness.

Sophie Nélisse spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the new season. She teased:

"As we go, there's obviously more characters that have to leave us, and the ones that we care about the most are the ones that have to go."

She further shared:

"I've always said this to people that die. I'm like, 'It's actually a testament to how good of an actor you are because we won't kill you off if we don't care about you (because) the audience won't care either.' We kill the characters that we are so attached to."

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, one of the creators of the show, Ashley Lyle, said:

"It’s not a lighter season. I do think it’s a more fun season. Part of that was by design. It’s spring… There’s a celebratory nature to it. But there’s a very strong underlying darkness to what they’re doing."

On-set farewell party

Nélisse revealed that they have a tradition wherein they throw ‘death parties’ for actors who leave the show. She reveals that there were more than one this season. However, she is cautious not to reveal names. Nélisse said:

"We had to throw a couple this season. Courtney (Eaton) and I hosted one for this very special person. We bought tombstones, we had this collage of pictures that we'd gathered from everyone on set that we were rolling on the TV. We had a little pamphlet with their face on it and just posters everywhere and we ordered a really crazy cake."

What to expect in the remaining episodes of Season 3

Yellowjackets has several twists and turns, and Nélisse says that while some of the old characters may leave, the audience will get acquainted with new faces in Season 3. She said:

"New characters are getting introduced this season so that's really fun and it just brought a whole other dynamic to the group as well. We have a lot of fun with them and it gets also very emotional at some point."

What is Yellowjackets about?

Yellowjackets follows the story of a high school girls’ soccer team that is involved in a plane crash, the repercussions of which follows them to their adult lives after 25 years. After the crash, the teenagers were stranded for 19 months in wilderness.

The Showtime thriller drama series is created and co-run by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson. The show’s third season premiered on Paramount+ with Showtime on February 14, 2025.
