Rick and Morty Season 8 Episode 3 took a break from the main storyline and featured a story about Clone Ricks and Mortys in the Citadel.
The Citadel was a trans-dimensional city-state location, inhabited by Ricks and Mortys from infinite realities and dimensions. While the location was once a safe haven and the meeting point for all Ricks and Mortys, the Ricks tried to take control of the place.
Mortys were mass-cloned and used by Ricks as sidekicks to protect them from dangers across the galaxy. Evil Morty became the Citadel's president by faking his identity in Season 5.
To break free from the Ricks' rule, Evil Morty demolished the place in the Season 5 finale and since then, the series has not featured much about the location.
Rick and Morty Season 8 finally revealed that the Citadel was being rebuilt by clone Mortys, who were finally rescued by Arcade Morty and Homesteader Rick in Episode 3.
More on this in our story.
Rick and Morty Season 8 Episode 3 finally solved the mystery around the Citadel
Since the Citadel is a key location, the episode suggested all the main characters' clones were transferred to the place after it was demolished. All the versions of Mortys banded together in what remained of the location and looked after one another, away from the evil control of clone Ricks.
However, while Mortys were trying to rebuild a peaceful community, Ricks entered their community and kidnapped Mortys to use them as slaves to rebuild the Citadel.
Rick and Morty Season 8 followed the distinction between these clones and how this vicious cycle of inequality continued even after Evil Morty destroyed the Citadel. In addition, Ricks also used Mortys for various experiments, led by Boss Hog Rick.
Homesteader Rick emerged as the fallen hero of Rick and Morty Season 8 Episode 3
While Rick and Morty Season 8's latest episode established the evilness of Ricks, Homesteader Rick was somewhat different.
While he was shot by the other clone Ricks for staying near Mortys and helping them with trade, Homesteader Rick survived and launched a revenge mission against the Ricks with Arcade Morty and Doc Morty.
Rick and Morty Season 8 Episode 3 also revealed that Homesteader Rick was not a clone, but a former cloning expert in the Citadel, who aided Ricks in cloning Mortys.
After Doc Morty dies and Arcade Morty and Homesteader Rick are captured by other Ricks, the latter accepts his former job back from Boss Hog Rick. However, Homesteader Rick built a huge Morty clone and a detonator linked to bombs across the Citadel.
While huge Morty killed the nearby clone Ricks, Homesteader Rick managed to press the detonator, while sacrificing himself and killing Boss Hog Rick and all other Ricks in the process.
After Homesteader Rick sacrificed himself to free clone Mortys, Rick and Morty Season 8 suggested that all of them were transferred from the Citadel to different locations, where they started their happy and free lives.
However, Arcade Morty returned to the Citadel to make graves for Homesteader Rick and Doc Morty, the fallen heroes of the episode, who helped in rescuing clone Mortys.
