Mr. & Mrs. Smith, the Prime Video spy series released in February 2024, was set to begin filming its second season later in 2025. The first season followed undercover agents Michael (played by Donald Glover) and Alana (played by Maya Erskine). They were strangers before they took on the aliases of a married couple, John and Jane Smith, respectively, and were instructed to complete missions.
Season one of Mr. & Mrs. Smith ended on a cliffhanger, but fans hope that season two will give some answers, even though it will follow a new Smith couple. Mark Eydelshteyn and Sophie Thatcher had been cast as the next Mr. & Mrs. Smith, but as Deadline reports, the second season has been shelved indefinitely.
Why Mr. & Mrs. Smith season 2 production is halted, and what it means for the show
Mr. & Mrs. Smith season two was scheduled to start filming later this year, approximately in the fall. But according to Deadline, Prime Video has decided to postpone the second season's production indefinitely because of cast troubles. Prime Video has yet to release an official statement or give any reasons for the delay. For now, it is unknown when production for season two will begin.
According to Deadline, sources report that the show might begin shooting in 2026 if New Regency's hopes come true. The production house co-produces Mr. & Mrs. Smith with Gilga, Super Frog, Big Indie Pictures, and Amazon MGM Studios. They hope to begin pre-production at the end of 2025 so that production can start in 2026.
If Prime Video takes too long to greenlight production for season two, the show could lose its relevance and even the interest of some fans. It has often happened that long gaps between seasons have led to low viewer retention, and that is not a good sign for any show.
There is another issue the show has to deal with, given the delay. The California Film Commission granted the show a tax credit of $22.4M back in March 2025. According to the rules, projects have to start filming within eighteen months of being awarded the credit. Thus, the show could face substantial financial consequences if production is not greenlit within the necessary time frame.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith is created by Francesca Sloane and Donald Glover, based on the 2005 film of the same name written by Simon Kinberg. Sloane and Glover are also executive producers on the show along with Stephen Glover, Hiro Murai, Nate Matteson, Anthony Katagas, Arnon Milchan, Yariv Milchan, and Michael Schaefer.
All fans and creatives behind the show can do now is wait until production for season two gets greenlit. Season one ended with a dangerous gunfight. Another Smith couple attacked the show's protagonists, John and Jane, which led to John getting shot. He began to lose a lot of blood when Jane went out of the house to confront the other Jane, which was followed by the sound of three shots being fired. The show did not reveal who fired the shots, what happened, or if John and Jane, aka Michael and Alana, are alive or not.
While season two will focus on a new Smith couple, fans are hopeful to see what happened to season one's John and Jane. Hopefully, season two's production will be greenlit soon, and the show will return with some much-anticipated answers.
