What Rebecca Miller said about Mr. Scorsese and what to expect

Director Rebecca Miller disclosed that the title character grew out of more than two dozen conversations she and the director had conducted over five years. Talking about the process of bringing the docuseries to life, she revealed:

"So there would be these conversations that would last five hours. I remember once we literally lost the light, because I realized at a certain point that he was much better if everyone left the room. So I would let the crew leave, we would set up the cameras, and then they would leave, and it would really feel like we were alone. And as time would go on, we really did forget. I mean, in fact, the framing was crazy,"

Miller shared that the director was ready to be honest and determined to visit places that he hadn't seen. She reflected:

“We had to do a lot of adjustments, but it was worth it, because there was just something he decided, I think, to honor this thing that he decided to do with a certain kind of honesty and an openness and an unwillingness to kind of tread the ground that he’d already tread. He really wanted to till new earth, I guess, and, I think that was the that. So that was always the backbone. And then everything came from those conversations, like all my archival dives and all my searches.”

Mr. Scorsese is a personal and raw story of a director whose work has consistently probed the moral and emotional underpinnings of human life. From his student films at New York University to his contemporary masterpieces, the collection explores the thematic concerns that have captivated Scorsese for decades: redemption, sin, and the intricate duality of good and evil.

The documentary follows his trail from Mean Streets and Taxi Driver to critically acclaimed masterpieces as Raging Bull, Goodfellas, The Departed, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Killers of the Flower Moon. With never-before-seen archival footage and testimonials from his peers and collaborators, the series delves into how Scorsese’s Catholic upbringing, passion for cinema, and personal challenges shaped his perspective.
