MTV has decided the fate of Catfish: The TV Show, one of its longest-running reality docuseries and a TV obsession for countless youngsters. The series, which has exposed the perils of online dating for 12 years, will not return for Season 10 as MTV has decided to cancel the show.

The series is based on the 2010 documentary Catfish by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. The documentary follows Nev Schulman, a young photographer, as he builds an online relationship with a young woman on Facebook. The movie was a critical success and led to this eponymous series in 2012. The film is also credited with coining the term 'Catfish', which means:

''A type of deceptive activity involving a person creating a fake social networking presence for nefarious purposes.''

Catfish: The TV Show is finally wrapping its run on MTV after nine seasons. Each episode of the series follows a "hopeful", the person being deceived in their relationship, and a 'catfish', the online scammer. Casting director Michael Esposito has revealed that the show has received 100+ applications in a day.

More on the cancelation in our story.

End of an era- MTV cancels Catfish: The TV Show after 12 years

MTV has canceled its longest-running reality TV docuseries, Catfish: The TV Show, and the famous reality series will not return for Season 10. Following the closing of the Paramount Skydance merger in August, the fate of the series was uncertain, and MTV has finally decided to cancel the reality show after 12 years.

The TV show has been an MTV staple since its inception in 2012, and has helped youngsters catch their online 'catfishes' with an expert team. The show was a cultural reset when it premiered in 2012, and sparked many debates and conversations about the dangers of virtual dating and modern relationships. The final season (Season 9) of the reality TV series premiered in April 2024 and concluded on July 16, 2024, marking the official end of an era.

Catfish: The TV Show was initially hosted by the powerhouse duo of Nev Schulman and Max Joseph. In 2018, Joseph left the reality TV series after seven years to pursue a career in directing. While a roster of celebrities was brought in to co-host with Schulman, presenter Kamie Crawford was eventually selected. Schulman and Crawford hosted the TV show for two seasons, following which the latter also announced her departure in October 2024 after six years.

Catfish: The TV Show- Legacy and International spin-offs

While MTV has set Catfish: The TV Show's fate in stone, the reality TV series is etched in fans' hearts and Pop culture. The docuseries not only popularised the term 'catfish', but also made the young generation aware of the online scams prevalent in online dating and friendships. Each episode of the series exposed the ugly realities of modern dating through a real-life couple, and also investigated the motivations and reasons behind their deception.

This extensive evaluation and research made it a pioneer in reality television, and also inspired many International versions in Colombia, Chile, Mexico, Brazil, and the UK. Additionally, the show's popularity led to a collaboration between MTV and Wondery in a podcast titled Catfish: The Podcast, which ran for two seasons.

The format of Catfish: The TV Show also led to two spin-offs: Catfish: Trolls, hosted by Charlamagne tha God, and Ghosted: Love Gone Missing, hosted by celebrity rapper Travis Mills and The Bachelorette Rachel Lindsay. While Trolls follows famous personalities confronting their online trolls, Ghosted follows stories of people trying to find their former partners and friends who have ghosted them.

MTV will continue to air reruns of Catfish: The TV Show and has also allowed the show's producers to shop Catfish elsewhere.
