Hulu's latest true crime miniseries, Murdaugh: Death in the Family, follows Alex Murdaugh, who was accused of double murder in 2021. Jason Clarke aced the complex role of Alex Murdaugh, but it wasn't an easy ride for him. Speaking with Variety, he noted how he prepped for the role, which involved watching hours of interrogation tapes, carefully noting the body language of men involved in such crimes. Clarke further told Variety:

"He's got an element of Tony Soprano in him. He's an entertainer. He's not the sad clown, He's the happy clown."

Both Alex and Tony Soprano were loud, charming, and loved being the centre of attention. However, during the night of the murder, Alex showed a different side; he did not make it loud, but instead mellowed it down. Clarke noted:

"That's the lawyer in him going to close, going for the kill."

Clarke told NBC Palm Springs that he was initially unsure of taking the role of Alex Murdaugh, but once he understood his character, he took it up as a challenge and further noted:

"Now I understand how he could fool everybody, how he could fool his son, how he could fool his wife, how he could fool his community."

Here's more about it.

Murdaugh: Death in the Family- Alex Murdaugh actor Jason Clarke on filming the murder scene

The murder is filmed from Alex's perspective, a shift that forces the viewers to confront the brutality. Clarke pushed for the moment to feel fast, mechanical, and stripped of theatrics. The crew mapped every beat, and the shots were quick, precise, and horrifying.

Clarke insisted they film the gritty murder scene sparingly, he told Variety:

"It is not nice pointing a gun at somebody, even an actor in a scene. There was also the feeling that we get one shot at it, because that's all he got."

There's blunt honesty in such an approach, and the result is a scene that feels sickeningly human rather than staged.

One detail Clarke argued to include was a brief moment of eye contact between Alex and Paul. That choice makes the sequence linger long after the frame cuts away. The crime was approached with a sort of reverent unease. No monologue, no heightened music. Just an act of violence carried out by a man who had run out of exits.

As Episode 6 reaches its final moments, the story returns to the night of the murder. Paul, completely unaware of what's next, is busy on his phone when he gets shot without a warning or a sound. It's precise, and the silence makes it even more horrifying. Yet he manages to stand and come out of the room, but he gets shot again. This leaves the dogs barking.

The sound cuts through the quiet night and alerts Maggie. She hurries over, trying to understand what she heard. When she reaches the scene, she gets shot in the leg. She tries to gather herself and gets shot again. The camera never shows the shooter. What we see is the aftermath. It is raw, cold, and enough to leave anyone shaken after the scene ends.
