Murdaugh: Death in the Family, the Hulu true crime, follows the downfall of South Carolina’s once-powerful Murdaugh family. Created by Michael D. Fuller and Erin Lee Carr, the series is inspired by the Murdaugh Murders Podcast by investigative journalist Mandy Matney, who closely followed and reported on the family’s scandals.
Murdaugh: Death in the Family centers on Alex Murdaugh’s crimes, including the brutal murders of his wife, Maggie, and younger son, Paul. Today, Alex serves two life sentences, while his only surviving son, Buster Murdaugh, lives a much quieter and more private life far from his family's past.
Murdaugh: Death in the Family- What is Buster Murdaugh doing now?
Hulu’s Murdaugh: Death in the Family follows a story that shocked the nation: the collapse of a dynasty that once had significant influence over the legal system in South Carolina’s Lowcountry for nearly a century. Alex Murdaugh, a prominent attorney and descendant of generations of prosecutors, was convicted in 2023 of murdering his wife, Maggie, and their youngest son, Paul.
During his father’s trial, Buster Murdaugh was the first defense witness to testify. As TODAY reports, he told jurors that Alex was
“destroyed, heartbroken”
when he first saw him after the killings.
For weeks, Buster sat quietly behind Alex in court as witness after witness testified. When the verdict was read on March 2, 2023, which found his father guilty of two counts of murder, Buster lowered his head into his hands. The following day, Alex Murdaugh was sentenced to two consecutive life terms.
Buster Murdaugh's life after the verdict
Following the verdict, Buster Murdaugh stepped back from public life. Once part of a respected and influential family, he found himself facing public scrutiny and resentment. In a jailhouse phone call with his father, according to The State, Buster shared his struggles, saying,
“I get stopped and yelled at all the time. I got cussed at in the gas station the other day,”
In March 2023 as NBC News reported Buster contacted local authorities after the New York Post published a photo taken through the blinds of his Hilton Head home. Police increased patrols near his property and shortly after Buster and his girlfriend reported being followed by a member of the media in a grey SUV.
Buster later moved in with his longtime girlfriend, Brooklynn White (played by Mina Sundwall in Murdaugh: Death in the Family), an attorney at Olivetti McCray & Withrow. The couple purchased a home in Bluffton, South Carolina, in May 2023 and has a golden retriever named Miller. In 2025, as People reported, the couple tied the knot.
Buster has stayed away from the family’s Moselle estate, where the murders took place, and from their beach home on Edisto Island. A former college classmate of Buster told People in 2022,
“He really withdrew after everything happened,”
He also said,
“He has really closed off and built walls around himself.”
Once a law student who followed in his family’s footsteps, Buster was expelled from law school in 2019 for poor grades and alleged plagiarism. His father later paid $60,000 to lawyer Butch Bowers in an attempt to get him readmitted. Although plans were made for Buster to return in 2022 Alex’s attorney Jim Griffin told The State that both parties agreed to delay his readmission. Buster has not returned to law school since, and it remains unclear if he is currently employed.
Buster Murdaugh is played by William Harrison in Murdaugh: Death in the Family. The show shows us the crimes of Alex Murdaugh and how they affected his family, including Buster. Buster Murdaugh’s life today is private which is perhaps best after the losses he has endured.
New episodes of Murdaugh: Death in the Family release weekly on Wednesdays on Hulu. The first three episodes are already streaming on the platform.
