The Murdaugh family head, Alex Murdaugh, was once considered a powerful figure in civil litigation law before his name became one of the biggest symbols of corruption and the rot that had consumed South Carolina’s legal industry. He resigned from his firm in 2021 following allegations from partners that he had stolen millions from clients. A year later, he was charged with double murder in the cases of the deaths of his wife, Maggie, and their younger son, Paul.

In March 2023, he was convicted and sentenced to two life terms. He subsequently pleaded guilty to 22 financial crimes in state and federal court, adding 67 years to his prison term. Alex Murdaugh, who attended law school at the University of South Carolina and worked at the family firm, is currently serving his sentence in a maximum-security prison in South Carolina. His appeal on grounds of alleged jury tampering is still pending.

Maggie Murdaugh, named Margaret Kennedy Branstetter was described as an outdoors-loving mother who enjoyed spending time with friends. Maggie was described as a devoted mother by her sister, Marian Proctor, at the trial, speaking of her bond with her sons.

Maggie met Alex at the University of South Carolina and graduated in 1991. The couple wed in 1993 and have two sons, Buster and Paul. On Tuesday, June 7, 2021, the bodies of Maggie and Paul were discovered riddled with bullets on the family’s hunting estate. She died at 52.

Buster Murdaugh, the older son of the couple, was once expected to follow his father’s legal path. But he was barred from re-entering law school after his first year due to poor academic performance. He was secondarily linked to the 2019 boating crash that killed Mallory Beach after his brother used his ID to purchase alcohol.

In 2023, he settled with Beach’s family. In addition, Buster denied any involvement in the death of Stephen Smith in 2015, who was discovered dead outside the Murdaugh estate. Buster told in the Fox Nation’s The Fall of the House of Murdaugh:

“I do not think that he could be affiliated with endangering my mother and brother.”

Buster got married to Brooklynn White in Beaufort, South Carolina, in May 2025 and keeps a low profile.

Paul Murdaugh, the younger son, was 22 when he was killed alongside his mother. He had been charged in the 2019 boat crash that killed Beach and was due to go to trial. Paul, a University of South Carolina alumnus, was known to be reckless but loved by all his friends. His death renewed scrutiny on the family’s history of legal power and privilege.

The docuseries, Murdaugh: Death in the Family, follows the rise and fall of a family that once ruled South Carolina’s legal system. For three generations, almost a century, three Murdaugh men, Randolph Sr., Randolph Buster Jr., and Randolph Murdaugh III, held the position of elected solicitor, which is akin to district attorney.

Murdaugh: Death in the Family features the work of journalist Mandy Matney, following her investigation of the family after the death of Mallory Beach. Matney executive produces with her husband, David Moses, on the Hulu project and continues to pursue her goal of revealing the truth behind one of the most haunting criminal stories in the U.S.
