Nautilus, AMC's new drama adventure television series based on Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, debuted in the United States on June 29, 2025, as a two-part premiere. Picked up by Disney+ initially, the series was in development limbo before being acquired by AMC, which has exclusive North American rights. The series currently broadcasts on both AMC and its streaming partner AMC+.

Written and produced by James Dormer, Nautilus reimagines the back story of Captain Nemo—a brilliant Indian prince turned outcast from his own country and who later leads a submarine rebellion against colonialism. The series touches on colonialism, identity, rebellion, and scientific discovery as a combination of science fiction and historical drama presented in a serialized TV format.

This staggered-release format provides the old-school TV viewers and the streaming enthusiasts with access to the show.

Episode format and length

The straightforward storytelling mechanism of the series makes it possible for Nemo's character to grow organically from one episode to another throughout the season.

  • Total Episodes: 10
  • Runtime per Episode: Around 45–50 minutes
  • Format: Serialized, linear story

There are no cliffhangers of the anthology type, and the show eschews side-tracks with its commitment to the bare bones story and character development.

Where was it filmed?

The majority of production took place in Brisbane, Australia, using high-tech film-making methods with practical effects, specially constructed underwater sets, and visual effects.

The merging of physical sets and focused CGI enabled the show to create a vast and immersive underwater universe that serves as the dramatic backdrop for Nemo's transformation and rebellion.

Who appears in the series?

Shazad Latif stars as Captain Nemo, giving a performance that navigates human nuance in power, revenge, and displacement between cultures. He is supported by a multi-ethnic international cast, which includes:

  • Georgia Flood
  • Luke Arnold
  • Céline Menville
  • Kayden Price
  • Jacob Collins-Levy
  • Benedict Hardie
  • Arlo Green

Some other guest stars include Richard E. Grant, Anna Torv, and Noah Taylor.

International release details

Even though the U.S. premiere took place in 2025, Nautilus originally premiered internationally. The show initially launched in the UK on Amazon Prime Video in October 2024, and it also launched on local platforms in other Asia-Pacific and European areas. AMC still retains exclusive North American streaming and broadcast rights, though.

Who designed Nautilus?

James Dormer, writer and producer of the series, is an executive producer as well. Dormer had worked on Strike Back and Beowulf as a producer and writer before. For Nautilus, he wanted to reinterpret a literary icon from the perspective of a post-colonial subject, exploring more of Nemo's political agenda and psychological evolution.

The series is not just concerned with the science and action of Nemo's quest but also with the emotional toll of rebellion and exile, which gives the adventure tale a fuller realization.

Nautilus provides a grounded, episodic retelling of an ancient myth clothed in historical facts and seafaring drama. Its steady release stream means that fans are always aware exactly when to tune in.

With only one double-episode launch at the start and a two-part finale, the season keeps its beat steady.
