Titled Vivo o Muerto, the episode follows the NIS team as they head to Mexico to investigate the disappearance of a woman who was last seen with a Navy seaman. The case is opened when a drunk seaman, involved in minor road accidents, is brought to the NIS office.

Despite Mary Jo’s objections, the seaman is held at the office for questioning. At the same time, Mike Franks takes an unexpected day off, and Lala has to step in to lead the team. Gibbs and Lala work together to find leads in the case.

They learn the missing woman and the seaman went to a club in Tijuana the night before. Lala figures out the club's name from something the seaman mumbled in Spanish while he was drunk. She and Gibbs head to the club to investigate further, while Randy stays at the office to question the seaman once he sobers up.

Meanwhile, the episode also explores Gibbs’ difficult past as Mexico is somehow connected to his family's murder. On the other hand, Franks also has a personal struggle to face as his marriage is falling apart. The official logline for NCIS: Origins season 1 episode 9 reads:

“The case of a missing woman who disappeared after a night of clubbing with a Navy seaman takes the team to Mexico, where they learn of a possible connection to Gibbs’ past.”

What happened in NCIS: Origins season 1 episode 8?

In the previous episode of NCIS: Origins, titled Sick as Our Secrets, the team investigated the murder of Father John Larkin, a Navy chaplain killed in the confessional booth at his church. Another priest, Father Bobby, believed he was the intended target since he had switched shifts with Father John that day.

Father Bobby knew the killer’s identity, but could not reveal it due to the Seal of Confession. To protect him, NCIS assigned Special Agents Randy and Gibbs to keep him safe at a motel. Throughout the episode, Randy battled with the guilt of letting Gibbs’ family die.

He confessed to Father Bobby that he was originally assigned to protect Gibbs’ family but stepped aside to care for his newborn son, who had colic. Agent Kurt Mitchell took over the assignment but was killed along with Gibbs’ wife and daughter.

Randy’s regret took an emotional toll on him and he grew distant from his family. Meanwhile, Gibbs reflected on the tragedy while still grieving his loss, and later left a heartfelt letter at the Mitchell family’s home.

Father Bobby then got inspired by Randy’s honesty and finally revealed the killer’s name as Joshua Adams, a young man struggling with addiction. NCIS tracked him down in an underground tunnel and arrested him.
