NCIS: Origins Season 2 shocked the audience with the revelation that Gibbs had moved on with Diane while Lala fought for her life in the hospital. The two had feelings for each other and almost kissed in the first season’s finale.
However, Lala soon met with an accident and recovered in the hospital, while Gibbs chose to be in a relationship with real estate agent Diane Sterling. Fans are now disappointed that Lala and Gibbs did not end up together.
Mariel Molino, who plays Lala, has now explained the logic behind Gibbs’ decision. In an interview with US Weekly, the actress revealed that though Gibbs has feelings for Lala, he fears losing her after the accident. Since he has already been through emotional turmoil due to the death of his wife and child, he wants something safe and stable in life now:
“This poor guy, he went through hell and back in season 1. [So] he wants something a little bit more safe. As much as he has incredible feelings for Lala, he’s trying to protect his heart from the thought of losing her again. It’s [him] just not wanting to open up his heart again just to have it ripped out again.”
Mariel Molino talks about Gibbs’ feelings for Lala in NCIS: Origins
During the interview, Mariel Molino added that though Gibbs is in a relationship with Diane, he still has feelings for Lala, which is evident from the care he shows towards her when she rejoins the team in NCIS: Origins Season 2. Talking about how Gibbs and Lala’s feelings are going to affect their life and work, Molino said:
“Even though we can’t play out this love, we can play out the subtleties of wanting someone and how that affects you in every aspect of your life, through work, in your career [and] in your personal life. You just want to prove them wrong or make them proud.”
The actress further teased that Lala will eventually come face-to-face with Diane, and it is certainly going to be an awkward conversation. She said:
“It’s going to be uncomfortable. It just sucks that Lala probably doesn’t want to have her see her, but yes, you are going to see them [together]. The writers are doing the best possible scenario of this and our relationship.”
In the mothership series, NCIS, Gibbs is married to Diane but later divorces her. Meanwhile, Lala finds no mention in the show and has only been introduced to the franchise in the prequel series.
With her accident in NCIS: Origins Season 1 finale, fans thought that her death might be the cause of her absence from the original show. However, now that she has returned safe and sound, it will be interesting to see how and why she goes away from Gibbs’ life.
Apart from Mariel Molino as Lala, NCIS: Origins stars Austin Stowell as Leroy Jethro Gibbs, Kyle Schmid as Mike Franks, Tyla Abercrumbie as Mary Jo Hayes, Caleb Foote as Bernard "Randy" Randolf, and Diany Rodriguez as Vera Strickland.
NCIS: Origins Season 2 airs on CBS on Tuesdays.
