Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 1's water scene was one of the season's most intense ones, with Holly and her mother, Karen, trying to hide from the Demogorgon. For viewers, it was one of the most suspenseful scenes, as everyone waited to see if the Demogorgon would take Holly or if she and her mother could hide in time.

Thankfully, Holly and Karen hid themselves in the bathtub, saving themselves from the monster. Speaking of the water scene, Nell Fisher, who played the character of Mike and Nancy's sister, Holly, said:

"That scene took over maybe a week to rehearse and to film. And we filmed in this bathtub with a clear wall."

Eventually, Holly is still taken by the Demogorgon in episode 2, even after Karen fights her best to protect her daughter.

Nell Fisher tells why Karen hid Holly underwater in Stranger Things Season 5

In Stranger Things Season 5, Episode 1, Holly is attacked by a Demogorgon that enters her room through a portal, trying to take her. In Episode 2, Holly is seen leaving the room and rushing to her mother, trying to say that the monster attacked her. Holly's mother, still in disbelief, sees the blood patch and hides herself with Holly in the bathroom's bathtub, covered with foam.

The Demogorgon enters the bathroom, breaks the shower glass, but still couldn't find them. The Demogorgon then looks at the bathtub, where the mother and daughter were hiding underwater, holding their breath. However, it is soon interrupted by Ted, Holly's father, who enters the home with a golf stick, looking for his wife.

Speaking of the scene and her onscreen mother, Nell Fisher said:

"She (Karen) starts to hear these banging noises from outside. As she makes the split-second decision to hide her and Holly in the bath that she's making, the bubble bath."

Demogorgon then leaves the room to find Ted. The scene ends with Holly and Karen both coming out of the water, catching their breath.

In that episode, the water scene played a major role in showing the danger Holly was facing and the extent Karen was ready to go to protect her daughter. Karen is usually seen as a confused mother who didn't know of Demogorgons. However, even after seeing Demogorgons for the first time, she didn't back down and did everything she could to fight them.

In another scene of Stranger Things, she fights the Demogorgon one-on-one with the help of a broken wine bottle. Speaking of the scene, Cara Buono, who played the character of Karen, said:

"I don't think she's even processing what she sees yet. But just goes into that natural mama instinct of "don't mess with my kid." And then pretty much gets into a fistfight with a demogorgon with her wine bottle."

According to The Duffer Brothers, the creators of Stranger Things, they wanted to give Karen a stronger character in this season, showing her resemblance to Nancy and her fearlessness when it comes to her loved ones.

Even in a hospital bed, Karen helps her children, Nancy and Mike, by revealing Mr. Whatsit's real name, helping them know that Holly is taken by Vecna.
