Néro the Assassin is Netflix's latest historical drama series, set in the South of France in the 16th century. The titular assassin works for the consul of Lamartine, Nicolas de Rochemort, who orders him to kill his daughter Hortense's groom so that he can marry her off to the Prince of Ségur.

Elsewhere, as a drought ravages France in Néro the Assassin, the Archbishop of the Church and Brother Penance are killing everyone who rejects the idea of God and believes in magic. Amidst this chaos, Nero learns that he fathered a daughter named Perla, who stands in grave danger. As per the one-eyed witch, Nero's last-born child can bring an end to the drought and the Church sees this as a rejection of God. With Brother Penance and the villagers out for Perla's blood, Nero and Hortense make a final effort to save the girl and prove her magic.

Here is the complete ending explained of Néro the Assassin.

As the Néro the Assassin's finale approached, the one-eyed witch died trying to help Hortense and her party. Elsewhere, the villagers of Segur beheaded Horace as a lesson to warn everyone about the outcome of helping Perla. After these tragic events, Hortense and others had two choices left: either to stay in Segur and attack the penitents or to escape to Lamartine. While Nero believed in the latter because the rebellion was dangerous for everyone, Hortense's final vote sealed their fate and it was decided that they would attack Brother Penance via the secret passage.

When Perla, Zineb and Rochenmort all supported Hortense, Nero had no option but to side with them and partake in the rebellion.

Néro the Assassin ending explained: Nero betrayed his group

It was decided that Hortense and Lothar would launch the attack along with an army of soldiers. However, in the end, Nero decided to betray his group because he was still not on board with this risky plan. He leaked Hortense's attack plan via a secret passage in the castle to Brother Penanace and the Archbishop. However, since Rochemort had already orchestrated the murders of Tancrede and the consul and even supported the Archbishop in all his bad decisions, Nero pinned this betrayal on his head and framed Rochemort for it.

Nero's leak made things difficult for Hortense and Lothar as Brother Penance increased the security in his castle. Nero had the perfect opportunity to convince Hortense to take Perla to Lamartine and only return when they were prepared enough to attack Segur.

Nero's plan in the Néro the Assassin finale would have worked perfectly if Rochemort had not proven his innocence. Once Hortense and Perla learned that it was Nero who betrayed them, they were angry with him.

Néro the Assassin ending explained: Perla made a huge sacrifice

While Nero was exposed, he had no time to convince Hortense and Perla, as the penitents had stormed the village and were looking for Perla. Nero disguised himself as a penitent to look for his daughter amongst the crowd, but was eventually recognized and hanged upside down. Seeing that her father's life is on the line, Perla made a monumental decision and plunged the one-eyed witch's knife into her chest and bled on earth. As the girl took her final breaths, she hoped her sacrifice would bring a change in the world, and it did. Perla's blood seeped into the earth and it rained heavily. The drought was officially over!

While Brother Penance saw the rain as an answer to his devotion to God and his soldiers' repentance, the Archbishop finally realised that they had failed to restore religion and the rain was a result of Perla's magic. When the Archbishop rejected Brother Penance's theory, he threw him off the balcony.

In the final moments of Néro the Assassin, as Nero lies beside his daughter's lifeless body, somebody knocks him off and kidnaps Perla. We see her coming to life as her unidentified kidnapper is carrying her away, a shocking tease for Season 2.

Néro the Assassin is streaming on Netflix.
