Netflix acquires rights to Australian series Playing Gracie Darling, here's everything you need to know

Australian thriller series Playing Gracie Darling has finally found the OTT platform where the rest of the world can catch the series: Netflix. The series led by Morgana O'Reilly is a suspense thriller involving missing children. The six-episode thriller streamed on Paramount+ in Australia, the UK, and Canada last month. However, Playing Gracie Darling remains unavailable in the rest of the world.

How is Playing Gracie Darling streaming on Netflix?

As mentioned before, the show was streaming on Paramount+, but only in Australia, Canada, and the UK. Therefore, as of now, the series remains unavailable in limited geographical locations. However, it seems that the rest of the world will see Playing Gracie Darling soon on Netflix, thanks to its deal with Sony.

Executive producers Rachel Gardner and Jo Porter of Curio Pictures (a Sony subsidiary) said this about the thriller being made available on Netflix later this year:

“We couldn’t be prouder to see Playing Gracie Darling so warmly embraced by Netflix resulting in the series reaching viewers around the world. It speaks to the universality of the propulsive story and the richness of the characters led by the incredible Morgana O’Reilly with Dame Harriet Walter and Rudi Dharmalingam.”

As mentioned above, the Netflix release date for the series is unavailable as of now. However, considering thrillers tend to perform well, many are hopeful that the Australian series will have enough viewership from people across the world as it streams on Netflix. What is the Australian thriller about?

Set in Australia, the main protagonist of the show is Joni Gray, played by Morgana O'Reilly. The M-rated (mature) thriller set in Australia deals with the dark topic of children disappearing in mysterious ways. Psychologist Joni Gray has to return to her hometown to learn what caused her best friend Gracie Darling's disappearance twenty-seven years ago.

She returns after another girl goes missing similarly. The synopsis for the thriller reads:

"When Joni was fourteen, her best friend Gracie Darling disappeared during a séance. Twenty-seven years later, the local kids get their kicks ‘Playing Gracie Darling’ – but the seemingly innocent game turns sinister when another girl disappears under eerily similar circumstances. Joni, now a child psychologist, returns to the town to confront her deep fear of the unknown and find out what really happened to Gracie that fateful night."
