Netflix adds world baseball classic to sports lineup with Japan deal, details revealed

The global streaming giant, Netflix, has expanded its audience, this time targeting all sports fans. The newest deal, which the platform has struck with World Baseball Classic, Inc. (WBCI), makes them the streaming service for the broadcasting of the 2026 World Baseball Classic in Japan.

This is truly great news for all baseball fans, as the 2026 tournament will now be easily accessible on Netflix in Japan. This is truly a massive shift for the streaming giant. Usually, we connect to this streaming platform with movies, TV shows, and documentaries.

However, getting an exclusive broadcast for the 2026 World Baseball Classic would be an incredible addition for dedicated fans.

While discussing the new partnership of Netflix, Noah Garden, the MLB Deputy Commissioner, Business & Media, said:

“This partnership demonstrates the growing popularity of the tournament, increasing interest in the event from global media companies and WBCI’s effort to engage with fans through innovative digital platforms.”

It is undeniable that this global content producer already provides a dedicated platform for streaming many sports-related content. The ability to stream the baseball tournament would be quite a shift from the usual manner. Usually, broadcasting rights are given to a mix of different media companies.

However, this time the modus operandi will take quite a drastic turn. It is undoubtedly a great opportunity for modern viewers. This is because of the ease of access that Netflix provides. Noah Garden also added:

“By joining forces with a leader in entertainment, we are not only honoring the tradition of baseball, but also embracing the future — ensuring that fans of all ages and backgrounds can enjoy the tournament in ways that fit their lives today.”

It cannot be denied that the streaming giant does have a huge market in Japan. This step by the global streaming giant is a move towards giving it a pinnacle position in the field of streaming. The fans' passion towards this game can provide Netflix with the perfect opportunity to cement its place for major events.

Evan Kaplan, the president of MLB Players, Inc., said in an interview:

“Players have a profound investment in expanding the game globally, as demonstrated by their participation in the World Baseball Classic and other international competitions. Japanese fans have long shown remarkable passion for international baseball, and the World Baseball Classic represents one of the sport’s most unique stages, where the world’s top players compete for national pride.”

The 2026 World Baseball Classic will have 20 teams fighting tooth and nail for the top position. The games will start on March 5 and 6, 2026. All 47 games will be available for streaming on the platform in Japan. The first rounds will be held at four different places: Tokyo, San Juan, Puerto Rico; Houston, Texas, USA; and Miami, Florida, USA.

Kaata Sakamoto, the Vice President of Content, Netflix in Japan, said in an interview:

“We are honored to partner with WBCI as the new home for the World Baseball Classic in Japan. We look forward to working with leading Japanese partners to make the World Baseball Classic a true nationwide celebration, and to deliver innovative live entertainment for our members.”
