The Netflix political thriller chronicles the tensions surrounding two heads of countries, where the French president is visiting the British prime minister when her husband is kidnapped, and the kidnappers place these leaders in a position to choose between their family and their country. The official synopsis for the show reads:

"When the British Prime Minister’s husband is kidnapped and the visiting French President is blackmailed, the two political leaders both face unimaginable choices. Forced into a fierce rivalry where their political futures, and lives, might hang in the balance, can they work together to uncover the plot that threatens them both? "

The series teaser succeeds in creating a suspenseful and chilling atmosphere as the British Prime Minister Abigail Dalton (Suranne Jones) announces after finding out about her husband's kidnapping that:

"They have weaponized my family. I will not be threatened. I will not negotiate. My loyalties are to this country. I will not allow it to be held to ransom."

On the other side of this table stands the French President Vivienne Toussaint (played by Julie Delpy). To make the situation in Hostage even more targeted and chilling, it is revealed that she is also being blackmailed, and her safety and life are constantly being threatened. Both leaders face unimaginable choices, something that originally made up the working title of the show, as The Choice, as revealed by Tudum, but rounded up to Hostage.

Along with Jones and Delpy, the thriller also features Corey Mychreest, Lucian Msamati, Ashley Thomas, James Cosmo, Martin McCann, and Jehnny Beth. Jones appears to be extremely excited for her Netflix debut, as revealed by Tudum:

"I’m thrilled to be on Netflix, in something I’m really proud of,” Jones says. “It’s been something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. We’d talked about projects previously, but for me, it was about finding the right thing. Hostage was perfect — me and Matt together, backed up by this brilliant, supportive team. I loved it."

To this, the writer Matt Charman adds:

"I’ve been dying to find the right story to tell with Suranne and I honestly believe what she’s done with this character is going to blow the Netflix audience away. An embattled British PM in the middle of a fight for her country and her family — she’s fierce, ruthless, and you can’t take your eyes off of her."

All five episodes of the captivating and suspenseful political thriller will be available to stream exclusively on Netflix from August 21, 2025.
