Tom Ellis, better known for playing Lucifer Morningstar, had revealed an unexpected anecdote in an interview with Square Mile: he auditioned for the lead role in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. It's one of those great Hollywood "what ifs" when a familiar television face nearly gets turned into a big-screen superhero.

Ellis made this known during Square Mile's cover about his hectic career transition, from his days playing in Lucifer to new endeavors such as Netflix movies and a crime show on CBS. The announcement prompted fans to go online and begin speculating.

For an actor who has made a career out of his combination of wit and charm, imagining Ellis in the role of Reed Richards, the intelligent and austere head of the Fantastic Four, seems both surprising and tantalizing.

"I remember looking at the photo of Richards in the comics and going, ‘this could be the one.’ We look quite similar," Ellis said.

It's easy to imagine fans envisioning him swapping his devilish smirks for superhero science and saving the world rather than ruling hell.

What Lucifer star Tom Ellis revealed

When someone as big as Tom Ellis, the actor who played the lead in Netflix's Lucifer, comes forward to say he auditioned for a big superhero film, people sit up and take notice. Ellis was made into a household name through his role as the suave and humorous devil, a character that demonstrated his comedic and emotional range. That combination makes him an ideal candidate for big Hollywood productions; he's gifted, assertive, and has demonstrated that he can carry a show.

So, the news that he came to audition for Reed Richards in The Fantastic Four: First Steps tells us two things: Ellis is prepared to transition into different types of roles, and studios are more willing than ever to bring TV phenomena into superhero films.

In a conversation with Square Mile, Tom Ellis said:

“There was a select group of people that got asked to tape for Reed Richards. I had been waiting for the right thing, timing-wise and character-wise, to come along. And I remember looking at the photo of Richards in the comics and going, ‘this could be the one.’ We look quite similar.”

But it's also a question of whether he's right for the character. Reed Richards is famous as a quiet, introspective scientist, a far different sort of role than the suave-talking Lucifer. That difference makes Ellis's audition intriguing.

Casting directors sometimes enjoy having actors get out of type and surprise audiences. Although he didn't receive the role, Pedro Pascal did; the audition itself may benefit him. It would demonstrate to filmmakers that Ellis is serious about taking on larger, more challenging roles-and that can easily lead to exciting new opportunities ahead.

It is not just celebrity gossip where Tom Ellis discusses his audition process for a huge blockbuster movie; however, it tells a lot about his career. He is not only the guy from Lucifer, but his decisions after the show prove that he is also trying himself in other types of roles: serious, procedural dramas, and now even huge movie projects.

When news regarding the audition spread, fans did what they do best: dreaming, arguing, and creating memes. Some were so hyped, going on about how Tom Ellis would be perfect as Reed. Others cracked jokes, asking if Lucifer's smile can really be paired with Mr. Fantastic's lab coat.

Many sites and fan pages commented on what Ellis might bring to the role, including emotional depth, a sense of humor, and the capacity to make complicated characters accessible to audiences. Some believed he might play Reed as both intelligent and human, while others were loyal to the already released cast, preferring different actors to put their own special spin on certain roles.

Although he may not have received the part, the audition process is important too, since it demonstrates that he is open to new experiences and taking risks. Casting directors look at the actors whom they find to be versatile and hardworking, and Ellis has already demonstrated that he is both.
