The Altruists is an upcoming eight-part series on Netflix that chronicles the rise and fall of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX.

Netflix has recently confirmed that Anthony Boyle and Julia Garner will star as FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried and executive Caroline Ellison on The Altruists. As of now, there isn't any news relating to the potential release date of The Altruists. However, it can be speculated that information in this direction would be made available soon by the streaming platform.

Here's everything that you need to know.

What is The Altruists all about?

The Altruists will depict the life and times of Sam Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison, along with the rest of the executives at crypto-currency exchange FTX, which went bankrupt in November 2022. It was soon discovered that Bankman-Fried, Ellison, and several other executives were responsible for a financial scam involving billions of dollars. As per the official Netflix synopsis:

"The story of Sam Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison, two hyper-smart, ambitious young idealists who tried to remake the global financial system in the blink of an eye – and then seduced, coaxed, and teased each other into stealing $8 billion.”

What is the latest buzz about The Altruists?

The upcoming Netflix show is helmed by Graham Moore and Jacqueline Hoyt as co-showrunners and executive producers. While Moore is well known for The Imitation Game and The Outfit, Hoyt was previously associated with The Underground Railway and Leftovers. Speaking to Tudum, Moore remarked:

"For nearly three years now, Sam and Caroline’s story has been my daily obsession. I’m so grateful to my friends at Netflix and Higher Ground for loving this story not only as much as I do, but in the same way that I do. And we can’t wait to show all of you why."

The first episode of the upcoming show will be directed by James Ponsoldt, who also doubles up as the executive producer, apart from being the director. In addition to him, Jessie Dicovitsky and Vinnie Malhotra will also be serving as executive producers representing Higher Ground Productions. They will be joined by Scoop Wasserstein for New York Magazine/Vox Media Solutions, Tonia Davis, Lauren Morelli, and Garner.

What happened to FTX?

FTX was a cryptocurrency exchange based in the Bahamas, founded by Sam Bankman-Fried in 2019. A CoinDesk article published in November 2022 first exposed the unnatural phenomenon of a large number of FTX customers withdrawing their money from the exchange. The first signs of financial fraud became apparent when many of the customers were unable to withdraw, and this soon led FTX to file for bankruptcy.

It was soon discovered that FTX was embroiled in a financial fraud involving at least $8 billion. Bankman-Fried and his executives, including Ellison, were soon arrested.

The Altruists will be available exclusively on Netflix.
