Booster Gold was first announced to be one of the upcoming DCU projects by James Gunn and Peter Safran back in 2023. Now, as Deadline reports, HBO Max is developing the Booster Gold series.
Given the success The Penguin has seen as a Warner Bros. Discovery show, Booster Gold could become yet another successful DC Comics adaptation for them.
Booster Gold: New Details
The show is still in its early stages of development, and thus, not much information has been made public yet. All we know is that David Jenkins has been chosen to write the pilot of the series. If the show is actually picked up, Jenkins will most likely be the showrunner.
David Jenkins is known for Our Flag Means Death on HBO Max and People of Earth on TBS. Thus, if Booster Gold goes to series, this would be Jenkins' second time creating a show for HBO Max. While Our Flag Means Death was not renewed after two seasons, both Jenkins and executives at HBO Max have been quite professional about it and are ready to collaborate for Booster Gold again if it goes to series.
A concrete logline is yet to be provided by the creators, but the show will be based on the DC character Booster Gold. According to DC, Booster is
"Mike Carter, a college football star of the 25th Century who earned the nickname “Booster” on the field. Even though people assured him a professional career of fame and fortune was in his future, he decided he couldn’t wait and wagered on his own games. The scandal halted his dreams of professional stardom and ruined his reputation."
DC is popular for its flawed characters, and Booster Gold will be yet another character who might just redeem himself after his questionable actions. DC Comics further describes him as,
"Taking a job as a security guard in the Metropolis Space Museum, Mike saw another opportunity after studying the early age of superheroes. With future and alien technology stolen from the museum, and a time machine that was on display, he realized he could not only become a superhero himself in a past era where his criminal history was unknown, but he could also make his good deeds profitable."
The question is how the series will portray the character and whether it will stick to the DC description, which further states,
"With his robot pal Skeets at his side, Mike time-traveled to the modern age and debuted as Booster Gold. For years now, he’s fought evil alongside different versions of the Justice League and his good pal Ted Kord, the second Blue Beetle. Recently, Booster Gold has broadened his scope and acts as a protector of history itself. Though always eager to take credit for good deeds on social media or sign with a well-paying sponsor, Booster is a good guy at heart and will drop everything if he genuinely sees someone in need."
As Gunn said back in 2023, the upcoming DCU projects will all be in the same timeline despite multiple timelines and universes existing in DC. Thus, Booster Gold will be set in the same universe as Superman (2025) and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (2026).
If Booster Gold goes to series, it will be released on HBO Max. Stay tuned for more information.
