The British icon franchise Doctor Who has another new project in the works, but this time around, it's for preschoolers. The BBC broadcast is next in line after The War Between The Land and The Sea is set to wrap its iconic run with the fifth and final episode.

The official announcement regarding the upcoming spin-off comes after it was announced earlier this year that the franchise is looking to branch out into the animated world with a version for preschoolers. It appears BBC Children's and Education has found its animation studio to undertake this exciting new Doctor Who project.

The Doctor Who universe continues to expand with exciting new projects. As the iconic British franchise wraps the run of a new miniseries titled The War Between the Land and the Sea, with the fifth and final episode, a new project already has a production update.

However, the latest BBC project is aimed specifically at preschoolers. The BBC had announced a while back that they were looking to partner with an animation studio to bring to life a brand-new series for the preschoolers, inspired by the franchise. The series was set to premiere on BBC iPlayer and CBeebies for preschoolers.

The announcement was followed by a competitive pitch process, which has now concluded, and the British animation studio Blue Zoo (LEGO City: No Limits, The Adventures of Paddington, and Wonderblocks) is all set to produce the new series. The BAFTA and Emmy-winning animation studio is set to begin production for the new series in 2026, and it has been commissioned for 52x11 episodes.

BBC Children's & Education Director Patricia Hidalgo announced the production update, saying:

"We can't wait to welcome the Doctor to CBeebies, introducing this beloved family favourite to our youngest audience for the very first time. This new series further strengthens our commitment to the British animation industry by championing homegrown productions with the potential to travel the world and, perhaps even through time and space."

Adam Shaw, co-founder of Blue Zoo, said that it is a great challenge and creative opportunity for the studio to take on the iconic franchise and bring it to life for a new generation of viewers to fall in love with:

"This year, we celebrated 25 years of Blue Zoo so it's an extra special honour to be given the chance to bring such a much-loved classic and a true British icon to a whole new generation of young viewers. Doctor Who means so much to so many people, and we don’t take that lightly at all. Reimagining something this legendary for a preschool audience is a brilliant creative challenge, and one we’re incredibly excited to dive into."

The animated series is set to find Doctor Who travelling through "time and space for the pre-school audience, solving mysteries and problems alongside their companions and other friends."
