Bosch, one of the most popular detective shows in the world of streaming, is expanding once more. MGM+ announced a new prequel series called Bosch: Start of Watch on October 15, 2025. Fans will be transported back to the early 90s with this show witnessing the start of Harry Bosch’s story as a young detective, way before the events of the main series.

Michael Connelly, author of the Bosch novels, recently shared in a conversation at The Proving Ground Book Club, that Bosch: Start of Watch will likely start shooting in April, and that it will not be based on his novels. Having great backing from the developers and a new cast, this update has made fans more enthusiastic than ever. It is being referred to as the most promising news to anyone who loves the Bosch universe.

Bosch: Start of Watch will be exploring uncharted territory

Bosch: Start of Watch is set in 1991 Los Angeles. Cameron Monaghan stars as Harry Bosch, a fledgling LAPD patrol officer, only 26 years old, learning to survive in the harsh environment of a city where gang violence is rife, racial tension is high, and corruption prevails within the depths of the system.

It is here, in this gritty backdrop, that we are introduced to Bosch in his initial days as a cop, where he gets sucked into an intricate case of a dangerous heist and a criminal money-laundering organization. All these difficulties at an early age compel him to doubt his personal ethical standards, boundaries, and faithfulness.

According to the official descriptions, the series will show us how Bosch turns out to be the detective we become familiar with later, someone who lives by the rule: everybody counts, or nobody counts.

The original books written by Michael Connelly did not have a full prequel and only gave brief references to the early years in Bosch's life, so Bosch: Start of Watch is believed to be an uncharted character territory. It allows the writers to dive deeper into Bosch’s background and his ambition, initial major errors, the experiences that hardened him, and the experiences that made him more aware of justice.

At The Proving Ground Book Club, Michael Connelly said:

“I'm deeply grateful to Michael Wright and the team at MGM+ for championing this next chapter in Bosch's journey with such remarkable care and integrity. Being able to see how Harry Bosch became the man we have loved for 10 seasons is a gift to me and his many fans. I can't wait to dig in with Cameron and the writers to explore this uncharted character territory.”

To the fans, the series provides them with a rare opportunity to watch Bosch transform into the tough, upright detective we have been following over the years.

Cast, creators, and what it means for the franchise

MGM+ has cast Cameron Monaghan ( of Shameless and Gotham), to star as the young Harry Bosch in the next prequel, Bosch: Start of Watch. Monaghan will assume the role of Bosch as a rookie cop, way before the events of the subsequent series.

Omari Hardwick, portraying Eli Bridges, a hard-training officer and Vietnam war veteran, will accompany Monaghan. Bridges is not a character from Michael Connelly’s books, he is a brand new invention in the prequel. This provides Bosch: Start of Watch with the space to experiment on new relationships, particularly a new mentor and rookie dynamic that has never been witnessed by the fans before.

MGM+ Studios and the same producers who were involved in the previous Bosch projects are behind-the-scenes producing the show. It has Michael Connelly himself as an executive producer, and this gives additional assurance that Bosch: Start of Watch will remain faithful to the franchise’s world.

With the earlier Bosch series, such as Bosch and Bosch: Legacy, lauded as having a more realistic plot, great characters, and a gritty tone, there is hope that Bosch: Start of Watch will emulate the same with something new to offer.
