Stephen King's haunting world of It is set to expand with the latest prequel series from Andy and Barbara Muschietti, titled It: Welcome to Derry. Set in 1962, the series aims to explore Pennywise's beginnings in the small town.
As we inch closer to the October 26 premiere of the horror series, brand-new horrifying and oddly mesmerizing images from the series reveal Pennywise performing in a circus in 1908.
Here's everything we know about the upcoming show.
Brand-new It: Welcome to Derry images reveal Pennywise performing in a circus
The supernatural horror series, It: Welcome to Derry, serves as a prequel to the 2017 and 2019 It films, aiming to explore the dark and twisted history of Pennywise and the town of Derry, Maine. The town of Derry has long been intertwined with the monster known as Pennywise, and the creators are hoping to peel back layer after layer to expand the It mythology.
The latest image from It: Welcome to Derry finds Pennywise performing in a circus in the year 1908. While the creators Andy and Barbara Muschietti have revealed that the show will be focused on Derry in 1962 to explore the horror town's history in layers, and the monster's origin mythology, it appears that the origin will also be explored by going further back in time.
"My intention with this was to create a story that is a little bit like an iceberg under the water all through Seasons 1, 2 and 3. There will be an expansion in the mythology and more answers to the big questions. The second season will be in 1935. At the end of Season 1, we are hinting at the reason why we are going to tell the story in two more seasons and backwards."
It isn't clear if Pennywise in 1908 will be a bigger part of the series or an attempt to set up an even deeper exploration back in time in further seasons. Muschietti has previously revealed that It: Welcome to Derry will be a hidden story that goes backward in time, with a final conclusion of events that finds the monster taking the form of Pennywise. It appears as if the revealed images might be a part of this conclusion, but that is pure speculation at this point.
"A hidden story… told backward” with a “final conclusion - the events in which It becomes Pennywise.”
The creators have been very guarded about the reasoning behind their decision to tell this story of Pennywise backward instead of starting with the monster's first origins, so we'll have to hold on until the October 26 release to understand the motive behind this decision and the importance of these images from It: Welcome to Derry.
"Of course, there’s more to it. There’s a reason and a secret why we’re telling the story backward. I can't tell you now. I guess you have to see the show."
While a lot of these factors are shrouding the upcoming It: Welcome to Derry series in mystery, the show has already received Stephen King's stamp of approval, so fans need to be nothing but excited (and terrified) for the release.
