3 Body Problem Season 2 gets an exciting new update

3 Body Problem Season 2 is on the way, and production will start sooner than anticipated. The science fiction series on Netflix explores humanity’s encounter with an alien race from a collapsing planet. The series has been adapted from Liu Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy, which begins with The Three-Body Problem. After the success of the first season, fans have been eagerly waiting for 3 Body Problem Season 2.

An update has surfaced that the 3 Body Problem, which has been renewed for two final seasons, will be filmed back-to-back, without much of a break in between. Production is starting in summer 2025, and season two could be released in 2026.

Production updates about 3 Body Problem Season 2 and Season 3

3 Body Problem is created by Game of Thrones creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo. The show’s first season introduces a vast, multi-decade mystery involving physics, philosophy, and first contact with alien life. The plot centers around humanity’s initial encounter with the Trisolarans, an extraterrestrial species facing environmental collapse on their home planet.

The 3 Body Problem explores themes of trust, survival, and the impact of scientific discoveries. Combining big philosophical questions with exciting drama, 3 Body Problem makes both the characters and viewers question humanity’s role in a huge, uncertain universe. With scenes set in different times and places, the show mixes personal stories with large-scale cosmic conflicts.

As reported by Screen Daily, a report submitted to the Hungarian National Film Office revealed the production details for 3 Body Problem Season 2 and 3. Filming is set to start on July 8, 2025, and will continue until August 2, 2027. While production of the third season will happen later on,3 Body Problem Season 2 could be ready by and be released 2026.

While season one was filmed mostly in the UK, 3 Body Problem seasons 2 and 3 will be filmed primarily in Hungary. This decision was taken most likely because the Hungarian Government is providing a 30% tax incentive for filming in their country. That would help the production team immensely as it would cover $80 million of the reported $267 million budget. The show will film some scenes in other parts of Europe and the US as well.

3 Body Problem Season 2 will focus on the second novel of the series, The Dark Forest. As reported by Tudum, D. B. Weiss spoke about the show, saying,

“We included a lot of what we loved from the [novels by Cixin Liu] in Season 1, but the vast majority of reasons we wanted to make this show are in Season 2,”

Weiss continued,

“We always wanted to get to the final page of the third book, and it’s really, really thrilling to us that we will get to do just that.”

3 Body Problem Season 2 is expected to arrive on Netflix in 2026.
