"A lot of murder" The Rookie stars Nathan Fillon and Jenna Dewan open up about their characters' relationships on the new season

Our second favorite couple on The Rookie are in for quite a romantic chapter for the show's eighth season as Nathan Fillon and Jenna Dewan, who play John Nolan and Bailey Nune, open up about their character arcs on the new season.

Speaking to People Magazine, the stars revealed that the couple are headed to Prague for a mission, and they are taking full advantage of the trip by also making it a romantic vacation, something that's been due for a very long time. Speaking to the outlet, Fillon said,

“I don't think these two characters get a lot of opportunity to leave town on such a gorgeous location. So they kind of ruled this job into a second honeymoon of sorts.”

Dewan then added,

“Our first honeymoon was a bit of a bust. It was a lot of murder. So this one felt like, well, while we're here, let's make this romantic, because how can you not in Prague? Even in classic John and Bailey [fashion], even though we were like, ‘Let's turn this into a second honeymoon,’ even that doesn't really go as planned,”

The actors went on to add that this season will have a lot of adrenaline powered bonding, something Fillon compared to a James Bond film. Dewan continued to talk about how the show is blending quite a lot of emotions this season as she quipped,

“There's a lot of suspense and scare almost, but there's so much comedy and there's a lot of banter and there's the romance. It just feels like you get a little bit of everything and it's done really well.”

The Rookie is officially back for it's eighth season, and with the first episode dropping on January 6, 2026, things are kicking off with a globe hopping opener set in Prague, which already raises the stakes for the season. Chenford fans have a lot to look forward to this season, as Tim and Lucy are circling around some important and serious conversations, romantically.

The core cast is also back. Nathan Fillon is returning as John Nolan, joined by Mekia Cox, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Melissa O'Neil, Eric Winter, Jenna Dewan, Shawn Ashmore, and Lisseth Chavez. Deric Augustine is no a series regular as Miles Penn.

Season 8 spans 18 episodes and will air mostly uninterrupted. The second episode is all set to release on January 13, and the third episode on January 20.
