Stranger Things Season 5 ended with the show giving all the characters their happy endings as the sinister battle at Hawkins finally came to a close. The last episode showed us where all the characters ended up in life, but much to fans' dismay, some fates remained unresolved.
This included Murray Bauman, Mr. Clarke, and Robin Buckley's girlfriend, Vickie Dunne. Thankfully, the Duffers do have an answer to the latter, as the creators discussed whether Vickie and Robin were still together by the time the show ended.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Matt and Ross Duffer spoke about Robin and Vickie's relationship, as Ross Duffer said,
"We do that flash-forward in Mike's story and we bring them up to a certain point, and then we want to leave it a little bit up to fans in terms of where these characters end up ultimately. Do Robin and Vickie stay together? Maybe, maybe not."
Matt Duffer then joined in with a little more insight as he added,
"From my point of view and from everyone I knew in high school, what percentage of couples remain together after they leave for college? Extremely low. Max and Lucas survive because their love is that deep, but very few others do. But, you never know."
What happened to all the characters in the Stranger Things finale?
The last episode of Stranger Things shows us where all the characters are, some time after the final battle. The good thing is that almost no one dies, and everyone gets the life that puts them on a "happy ending" arc, if not forever, then at least for the time being.
When the Upside Down starts collapsing for good, Eleven chooses to stay behind, knowing it means she might not come back. It is framed as a final act of responsibility as she says goodbye to Mike in a brief, devastating moment before the world closes in on her.
Later, during a final Dungeons & Dragons game, Mike imagines Kali creating one last illusion, letting Eleven escape to somewhere peaceful. The show never confirms if it is real or just hope doing what hope does best, but it's a shred of it that Eleven is somewhere beautiful, watching the waterfalls.
The rest of the group grows up. Mike, Dustin, Lucas, and Will graduate, with Dustin standing out as valedictorian. Mike becomes a writer, Will leaves Hawkins to live openly as himself, and Lucas and Max stay together, choosing something close to normal.
Steve stays in Hawkins as a Little League coach. Robin heads to Smith College. Nancy drops out to chase journalism, and Jonathan becomes a filmmaker. Joyce and Hopper finally get their happiness, getting engaged and leaving town behind to start a new life in Montauk.
Stranger Things is available to stream on Netflix.
