"Back in the day": Matt and Ross Duffer talk about Finn Wolfhard's relationship with Joe Keery on Stranger Things set

Finn Wolfhard and Joe Keery may have a complicated relationship on-screen on Stranger Things, but their off-screen persona is completely different. Ross and Matt Duffer opened up on the behind-the-scenes dynamics between the show's older and younger actors while reminiscing on Keery and Wolfhard's relationship in the earlier seasons.

During a panel at the Paley Center in New York, Matt Duffer spoke about how a younger actor looked up to Finn Wolfhard and how it was a full-circle moment, as he used to have the same dynamic with Keery. Talking about it, he said,

"I loved bringing in the younger guys. These kids were … especially [this one boy] — he was following Finn around like a puppy dog. He thought Finn was the coolest. That's exactly how Finn was with Joe [Keery] back in the day. I mean, Finn followed Joe around like a little puppy dog. It was so cute."

Wolfhard then talked about what it was like to work with the younger actors, as he added,

"I got to kind of weirdly do what these guys did in the first season, which is kind of protect ... It almost felt like I was protecting like a younger version of myself or that we were, this season, protecting versions of our younger selves. And that was really fun. And also just hilarious because those kids are so funny. They're all Gen Alpha, and I don't know any…"

After three years of patiently waiting, the fifth and final season of Stranger Things has finally arrived in a two-part release schedule. The main cast is back, including Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Maya Hawke, Priah Ferguson, Brett Gelman, Cara Buono, Linda Hamilton, and Jamie Campbell Bower. Matt and Ross Duffer are helming once again, bringing their show to the conclusion it deserves.

The first volume of Stranger Things 5 dropped in November, opening to positive reviews and a high score on review sites. The second volume is all set to drop on December 25, 2025, and the finale will release on New Year's Eve.
